DIVERSITY OF WILDLIFE
The wildlife of india consists a mix of
different types of organisms . Apart from
a handful of major farm organisms ,
India also has a wide variety of
organisms native to it. It is home to the
royal bengal tiger, Asiatic lion, golden
langur, wild dogs, sloth bear, Himalayan
black bear, snow leopard, alligators,,
Indian bison, red panda, wild asian water
buffalo, the dhole, striped hyena, Asiatic
elephant and the Himalayan wolf.

FOREST COVER OF INDIA

Indian forest cover ranges from the tropical


rainforests of Andaman islands, western
ghats and northeast India to the coniferous
forests of himalayas. Between these
extremes lie the sal dominated moist
deciduous forests of north-east India ; teak
dominated dry deciduous forests of central
and south india and the babul dominated
thorn forests of western gangetic india and
deccan plateau.The important medical trees
include neem which is widely used in rural
herbal remedies

ENDEMIC SPECIES I INDIA


India contains 172 or 2.9% of IUCNthreatened species. These include The
Asian Elephant, The Asiatic Lion, The
Royal Bengal Tiger, The Indian
Rhinoceros, The mugger crocodile, The
Indian White Rumped Vulture, Nilgiri
Leaf Monkey, The blackbuk, The Indian
bustard, The dhole, The asiatic cheetah
and the brown and carmine Beddomes
toad.

endangeredIndiantop
predator of 2010,
thedholeis on edge
ofextinction. Less than
2500 members of the
species remain in the world.

species of grey langurs are
found in India out of which
five are endemic.

CONSERVATION AND ITS


NEED

This regions bio-diversity is preserved in 89


national parks, 18 biosphere reserves and over
515 sancturies.India is one of the 17 megabiodiverisities of the world and hosts 3 of the
worlds bio-diversity hotspots.As it has many
rare species, it is essential to preseve them in a
proper and managed way. In 1972, Project Tiger
and Project Elephant were launched to
safeguard crucial habitats; further federal
promotions were introduced in 1980. Now it
hosts 26 wetlands registered under Ramsagar
Convention.

RECENT EXTINCTIONS
The exploitation of land and forest
resources by humans along with
trapping and hunting for food and sports
has led to many recent extinctions in
the wildlife of india. These species
include mammals such as wild zebu,
javan rhinoceros and sumatran
rhinoceros. Extinction of many smaller
species is not confirmed while some of
the species have not been seen since
their description. Among the birds, the
