'Century 21st Modern Twist on an Old Fable'.

TV drama is becoming high-concept & sophisticated, the commissioning channel wants to compete in
this market. A respectable TV channel has commissioned your production company to produce a pilot for
a drama.
The channel wants to see how you get your audience hooked in the first 5 - 10 minutes of your TV
Drama. The drama must be a 'realist 21 century modern twist on an old fable'. A single camera should
be used to express your ideas, themes and, most importantly, characters. The channel believes that
strong characters are key to competing with other channels; and so, characters need to be expressed
through your chosen visual motif.
As well as creative use of camera the channel expects high production values in your creative use of
sound and editing. Through use of wild tracks and folly sound should be clear and fit for purpose. Editing
should have good pacing and rhythm with the aim of expressing your idea complementing your shot
design.
By the end of the pilot you want to leave your target audience wanting more!
The channel recommends that you research rivals dramas to see what methods have been used. Other
recommendations, which you should consider, keeping your locations to a minimum and that they
complement your idea.
Characters should be kept to a minimum and you should source performers who have a sense of
professionalism, suit the role and want to perform.
Consider design, such as set dressing, costumes and props and how that may help in expressing your
themes and ideas.
Ultimately, think about how to use shots & arrangements of sequences to represent characters and
theme.
Keep expositional dialog to a minimal, remember - 'show, don't tell'!
