What are Sacred Groves ?


Sacred Groves are relic forest patches that are
traditionally protected by communities in
reverence for a deity.
Sacred groves are important for the forest
diversity because they provide refuge to many
plant and animal species of conservation
significance.
Sacred Groves are present in abundance not
only in India but also in various countries around
the world.

Traditional Sacred Groves : Place where
the village deity resides
Temple Groves : Groves created around a
temple
Burial Grove : Groves created around
burial or cremation grounds

Why are Sacred Groves


important ?
Several plants and animals that are
threatened in the forest are still well
conserved in some of the sacred groves
Several medicinal plants that are not to be
found in the forest are abundant in the
sacred groves
Rare, endangered, threatened and endemic
species are often concentrated in sacred
groves

Physical and biological components of the


sacred groves ecosystem help in moderation
of the climate regions, maintenance of the
nutrients cycles and soil fertility
Often streams and rivers originate from
Sacred Groves or wells and tanks are seen
within or near the groves which form
important water source for the rural
population.
