Teenage Relationships

• During your teenage years, you form friendships and start to


develop intimate relationships with members of the opposite sex.
• Intimate Relationships are characterized by:
1. Self-Disclosure and your capacity to trust others
2. Allowing yourself to share sensitive and private topics about
yourself.
3. You become more open to others by expressing what you think
or feel; you may even share your secrets.
Friendship

• Is a form of relationship between two or more people.


• Is characterized by a more mutually satisfying relationship of
caring and sharing.
Types of Friendship

1. Acquaintances- type of friendship whom you join only once in a


while or ocassionally.

2. Companions- type of friendship where you share some interest


through regular interactions

3. Intimates or bestfriends- type of friendship where you give and


receive opinions and support.
Types of Peer Groups

1. Clique- composed of smaller members (four to six members) and


is exclusive to peers who shares the same interest.

2. Crowd- Composed of 10-20 members.Members of a crowd share


similar social activities such as parties.
In a study conducted by Furman,it was found that;

Girls are having friends as source of social support is more common,


compared with Boys. Girls are more expressive than boys and usually show
their intimacy by talking about personal matters. Girls tend to get
together to having bonding moments through emotional sharing. They are
more intimate and emotionally attached to others. They are easily
affected by threats or relationship problems are more sensitive to
rejection issues.

Boys, on the other hand show intimacy in nonverbal ways. Thus, boys tend
to get together for certain events or to compete.
Attraction and Romantic Relationships

• As you become more capable of forming intimate relationships


during adolescence , the emergence of romantic relationships may
occur after you have experienced emotional closeness with
members of the opposite sex.
• Teenagers may initially describe a feeling of attraction or
something that draws them to become closer to another person.
Sometimes, they like or are fond of someone because of
characteristics that they really admire.
• Attraction or being attracted to someone are just normal for your
age.
Ways on How attraction to someone is
expressed

• How you express your feelings of attraction or admiration is


another area of concern.
• Deal with your feeling or how you express such feelings.
Phases of Romantic Relationships

1. Discovery of interest- through socialization with potential


romantic partner.

2. Dating- it is done to know each other

3. Commitment- where adolescents think about survival and


growth in their relationship with others.
After dating, teenagers may start to become engaged in romantic
relationship.
Expression of Love and Commitment

• Love is a choice. You express your love for another person not
because you are force to do so, but because you have decided to
share yourself with another person.

• Love also involves trust and commitment. You should have


confidence such that even if you do not see each other, your
partner remains faithful to you
• However, some teenagers fail to define the boundaries of their romantic
relationships. They become so attached that they can no longer separate
their own identity from their partner. Hence they become dependent on
one other and find themselves unable to function well without the
presence of the other.
• Conflicts or misunderstandings may arise in Romantic Relationships.
Ways to become responsible in a Relationship

1. Clarify your boundaries

2. Learn to communicate

3. Invest in an “emotional bank account”

4. Learn to forgive other

5. Consult professionals
