Classification of six stroke engine

6
Working of single piston designed six stroke engine

7
The intake stroke happens when the
piston is on its downward path with
the intake valve open. This action
creates suction, drawing atomized
fuel in this case gasoline mixed with
air, into the combustion chamber.

8
The air-fuel mixture present in
it compresses and is ready for
combustion

9
The compressed fuel is ignited
using spark plug. This makes the
gases in cylinder expand and
piston moves to BDC.

10
After the end of power stroke, the
exhaust valve opens and the piston
starts moving towards TDC. The
waste gases exit through exhaust
valve.

11
After the end of exhaust stroke,
the second inlet valve is opened
and water is injected in the
cylinder. Due to high
temperature of cylinder(about
200 to 250 oc) the water is
converted into steam and it
expands till the piston moves
towards BDC.

12
After piston moves towards BDC,
the exhaust valve is opened again
and the piston moves towards
TDC. During this time the steam
exits through exhaust valve.

13
Notable points:
 Note that there are 3 separate valves each for

fuel inlet, water inlet and common exhaust.

The water inlet starts only when the engine is

heated to required extent.

The water used here is pure distilled water in

order to avoid scaling/sludging in engine cylinder.

The water inlet is disabled if the cylinder
temperature drops below 120 oC.

Opposed piston Design six stroke engine

16
Advantages

 Reduction in fuel consumption by at least

40%

 Two expansions(work/Power stroke) in six

strokes

 Dramatic reduction in pollution ( up to 65%)

 Higher overall efficiency

 Lower engine temperature & noise level

17
Disadvantages

 Lesser Brake power & indicated

power

 Engine size increases- many number

of cylinders & additional components

 Repairing cost increases-

construction is complicated

18
Applications

 Used in achieving high efficiency

Used in reducing pollution
Used in temperature regulating engine
Used where the operating temperature of

engine is high
Used in racing cars to achieve high speed,
torque along with efficiency
