Gansu Province to the
Shan-hai Pass of

✢ The Great Wall of China ,one of the greatest Wonders in the World, was enlisted in the World
Heritage by UNESCO in 1987.

The "Long Wall" has a long history — more than 2,300 years. It was built in different areas by different
states/dynasties to protect different territorial borders.

WALLS
✢ This long wall is one of the most
important areas built by the Ming
dynasty.

✢ 980 meters above sea level


 11 km long
 between 5 and 8 meters high
 6 meters wide at the base
 5 at the top.

TOWERS
✢ These were built according to the
criteria of the different dynasties.
✢ Every 500 meters or less (1,640
feet) on the Great Wall there was a
flanking tower allowing defenders
to shoot arrows at attackers at the
face of the wall.
✢ Along its route there are about
24000 towers.

STEPS OR DOORS ( FORTRESSES )
The three most important are:
✢ Shanhai Pass
✢ Juyong Pass
✢ Jiayu Pass

✢ There were many archery


windows and gates on the forts.
The fortress gatehouses were
the strongest and most
impregnable structures on the
Great Wall.

BARRACKS AND WATCHTOWERS

✢ The barracks were built


along the same or directly
integrated into the walls and
located at long distances.
✢ In the barracks lived the
soldiers who protect the city
from invaders.

Families were separated, and


many workers died and were
buried as part of the Great
Wall itself.

materials up the mountains and across the
plains...
✢ Carried by Hand — the usual way
✢ Primitive Technology — wheel
barrows and ropes
✢ Animal Use — doubtless fact and
doubtful legend

The Great Wall over the ages used around 100,000,000 tonnes of stone, bricks, and
mud.

Curiosities
✢ Much of the Wall is reputed to be the largest cemetery in the world. Approximately 10 million workers died
in its construction.

✢ 70,000 Visitors Per Day! — and that's just one section! After the Great Wall opened to the public as a
tourist attraction, hundreds of millions of visitors have been to its various sections.

✢ Badaling section is the most visited section (63,000,000 visitors in 2001). In peak seasons, the visitor flow
can be up to 70,000 per day!

✢ There was great consternation when the first Chinese astronaut, Yang Liwei, revealed that in fact could
not see the Great Wall from space.
