+ The Great Wall of China (
traditional Chinese:  萬里長城 ; 
simplified Chinese:  万里长城 ; pinyin
: Wànlǐ Chángchéng, literally "ten
thousand li wall") is a series of 
fortifications that were built across the
historical northern borders of 
ancient Chinese states and 
Imperial China as protection against 
various nomadic groups from the 
Eurasian Steppe.
Who made the Great
Wall of China built?
+ Emperor Qin Shi Huang, also called the
First Emperor, united China. He
masterminded the process of uniting the
existing walls into one. He ordered
construction of the Great Wall around
220 B.C., the labor force that built the
wall was made up largely of soldiers and
convicts. It is said that as many as
400,000 people died during the wall's
construction; many of these workers were
buried within the wall itself.

were used from the mountains; when building it across
the plains, the materials used were earth, bricks, and
lime. Even branches of willow trees were used with
sand when the Great Wall was built across the deserts.
Elsewhere, quarried granite or even marble blocks
were used.

21,196.18 kilometers (13,170.7 miles), according to
the National Cultural Heritage Administration (NCHA).
This is the first time that China has scientifically and
systematically measured the length of all of the Great
Wall after a six-year-long archaeological survey.

construction of the Great Wall. The wall was
not built in a single time period, but combined
effort of many states and dynasties in history.

+ The best way to get to the Great Wall from Beijing is
by bus or to hire a car. The nearest is the
Juyongguan Great Wall, 60 kilometers away from
the downtown; the two best-known sections,
Badaling and Mutianyu, are 70 kilometers (43
miles) and 80 kilometers (50 miles) away
respectively.
How much is it to enter
the Great Wall of China?
+ The general admission for the Great Wall at
Mutianyu is 40 yuan for adults, 20 yuan for seniors,
20 yuan for children under 1.4 meters, and free for
children under 1.2 meters. This cost is compulsory
to see the wall. After paying this fee, you can opt to
take one of the two hiking trails that lead onto the
wall.ss

+ The Great Wall is reputed as one of the seven
construction wonders in the world not only for its long
history, but its massive construction size, and its unique
architectural style as well. The Great Wall was declared as
one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in 2007.
UNESCO acknowledged it as the largest man-made
structure on Earth.

Shanhai Pass
Shanhai Pass was a fortress
built in the Ming Dynasty (1368 –
1644) and is the first pass in the East
of China. It is located outside of
Qinhuangdao City on Bohai Bay and
305 km away from Beijing. Given its
strategic location, it's reputed as the
"First pass under heaven".
