Thermodynamics in Materials
Science & Engineering
Origin of the term:
Thermodynamics --- Study of how transfer of heat
influences matter.
Now:
Thermodynamics --- Encompasses all of the
influences and interrelationships that affect the
condition of matter --- thermal, mechanical,
chemical, gravitational, surface, electrical,
magnetic, atomic, ...

Levels of Thermodynamics
Phenomenological --- Focuses on the
phenomena that matter can experience as
exposed by experimental observation.
Statistical --- Explains & predicts the
properties of matter from their structure.
Quantum Mechanics --- Explains why the
structure of matter is as it is observed.
