EXAMINATION OF TMJ

CONTENTS
• Definition
• Anatomy of the joint
• Clinical Examination of TMJ
• Clinical Examination of Muscles of Mastication

DEFINITION
• The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the
articulation of the mandibular condyle with
the glenoid fossa of the temporal bone.

ANATOMY OF THE JOINT
• Bony components of the joint
i. Mandible
ii. Temporal Bone
• Articular Disk
• Synovial Membranes
• Retrodiscal Tissue
• Ligaments of TMJ
• Blood Supply
• Nerve Supply

CLINICAL EXAMINATION OF TMJ
1. History taking
2. Inspection
3. Palpation: Intra-auricular and Extra-auricular
4. Auscultation: Joint sounds

INSPECTION
• Inspected for
Asymmetry, Scars,
Swelling, Ulceration,
Sinus openings in pre
auricular area.
• Observed for
Deviation or
Deflection of
mandible on mouth
opening.
• Assesment of range
of mandibular
movements.

PALPATION
• Palpation done by standing at 10 o’clock or
11 o’clock position.

INTRA-AURICULAR EXTRA-AURICULAR

JOINT SOUNDS
• 2 Types:
• Clicks: single explosive noise of short duration
• Crepitus: continuous ‘grating’ noise.

CLINICAL EXAMINATION OF MUSCLES
OF MASTICATION
• Functional disorders of the masticatory muscle
are probably the most common TMD complaint.
• Masticatory muscle disorder : Pain and
Dysfunction.
• Muscles examined:
1. Temporalis
2. Masseter
3. Medial pterygoid
4. Lateral pterygoid

CONCLUSION
• As it is rightly said
“the first step towards cure is to know what the
disease is”
• Therefore a thorough examination of TMJ is
very important for proper diagnosis and
treatment of the condition.
