In a book titled "Betawi Batik: In the Perspective of Creative Culture" by Suwati
Kartiwa, it was explained that most likely the origin of Betawi batik originated from
the assimilation of the Javanese people from the coastal regions producing batik with
the fused Betawi people. They gathered and lived for a long time in a neighborhood
of the city of Batavia. After that, they spread culture in the form of batik.
This one batik motif turns out to be a royal theme in the land of Batavia for the first
time around 130 AD. Taking its own name refers to the belief of the people at that
distinctive look must be made an icon of Jakarta. Now, therefore, as a form of cultural
acquisition, ondel-ondel was incorporated into the batik motif and created the
Loreng Ondel-ondel motif. Little information, many Betawi people believe that the
something bad.
Loreng Ondel-Ondel Motif
The natural landscape seems to be one of the beauties of the Betawi motif. That is also
what is seen in the Nusa Kelapa motif. Investigate a calibaration, this motif has a design
idea from the Ceila Map created in 1482-1521 during the reign of King Siliwangi.
From this map, it is known that Jakarta was formerly called Nusa Kelapa. Then, the name
changed to Sunda Kelapa, changed to Jayakarta, changed to Batavia, and finally created
Jakarta. Well, the natural motif is what then illustrates how Jakarta at that time was still full
of beautiful nature, even the mountains and rice fields that were spread out.
Nusa Kelapa Motif
This motif turned out to be the portrayal of the Netherlands when it entered the
Sunda Kelapa region. At that time, the Sunda Kelapa region was still a jungle filled
with Rasamala tree species. Many Betawi people at that time considered the tree
sacred because of its distinctive odor and its trunk could be made as starch or
in Marunda. With the theme of preserving Betawi Coastal culture, Monas batik motifs
appear with the dominance of red and yellow colors that are challenging and
cheerful.
