Elimination method steps
Step 1:label the equations

Step 2: which variable has the same number in front of?

Step 3: Subtract if the signs are the same.

Add if the signs are different.

Step 4:find both x and y

1) Solve x + 8y = 26
x+y = 5
 Step 1 : x + 8y = 26 1
x+y = 5 2
 Step 2 : which variable has the same number in front of?
 Variable x ,so we will eliminate x

 Step 3 : Subtract if the signs are the same, add if the signs are different.

 Step 3 : Subtract x + 8y = 26
- x+y = 5
7y = 21
y = 3
X=2
 Step 4 : find x , use equation 1 or 2
Y=3
x + 8y = 26
x + 8x3 =26
x + 24 = 26
X=2
2) Solve 2x + 3y = 16
4x – 3y = -4
 Step 1: 2x + 3y = 16 1
4x – 3y = -4 2
 step 2 : which variable has the same number in front of?
 Variable y ,so we will eliminate y
 Step 3 : Subtract if the signs are the same, add if the signs are different.
 Step 3 : Add 2x + 3y = 16
+ 4x – 3y = -4
6x = 12
x = 2
 Step 4 : find y , use equation 1 or 2
X=2
2x + 3y = 16 Y=4
2x2 + 3y =16
4 + 3y = 16
3y = 12
y=4
3) Solve 2x – 3y = 11
5x + 3y = 17
 Step 1: 2x – 3y = 11 1
5x + 3y = 17 2
 step 2 : which variable has the same number in front of?
 Variable y ,so we will eliminate y
 Step 3 : Subtract if the signs are the same, add if the signs are different.
 Step 3 : Add 2x – 3y = 11
+ 5x + 3y = 17
7x = 28
x = 4
 Step 4 : find y , use equation 1 or 2
X=4
2x – 3y = 11 Y = -1
2×4 – 3y = 11
8 – 3y = 11
- 3y = 3
y = -1
4) Solve 2x + 3y = -2
2x – 2y = 28
 Step 1: 2x + 3y = -2 1
2x – 2y = 28 2
 step 2 : which variable has the same number in front of?
 Variable x ,so we will eliminate x
 Step 3 : Subtract if the signs are the same, add if the signs are different.
 Step 3 : subtract 2x + 3y = -2
- 2x – 2y = 28
5y = -30
y = -6
 Step 4 : find x , use equation 1 or 2
X=8
2x + 3y = -2 Y = -6
2x + 3×-6 = -2
2x - 18 = -2
2x= 16
x= 8
5) Solve 6x – 2y = 33
4x + 2y = 9
 Step 1: 6x – 2y = 33 1
 4x + 2y = 9 2
 step 2 : which variable has the same number in front of?
 Variable y ,so we will eliminate y
 Step 3 : Subtract if the signs are the same, add if the signs are different.
 Step 3 : Add 6x – 2y = 33
+ 4x + 2y = 9
10x = 42
x = 4.2
 Step 4 : find y , use equation 1 or 2
X = 4.2
6x – 2y = 33 Y = -3.9
6 ×4.2 – 2y=33
25.2 – 2y=33
– 2y=7.8
y=-3.9
6) Solve 3x + 7y = 26
3x + 5y = 13
 Step 1: 3x + 7y = 26 1
3x + 5y = 13 2

 step 2 : which variable has the same number in front of?

 Variable x ,so we will eliminate x
 Step 3 : Subtract if the signs are the same, add if the signs are different.
 Step 3 : Subtract 3x + 7y = 26
- 3x + 5y = 13
2y = 13
y = 6.5
 Step 4 : find x , use equation 1 or 2
X = - 6.5
3x + 7y = 26 Y = 6.5
3x + 7×6.5 = 26
3x + 45.5 = 26
3x =-19.5
x=-6.5
