What is engineering construction and
management?

They are vital on building and maintaining the


infrastructure. They make the concepts and designs
become reality.
Construction engineering is about organising and
coordinating the people, equipment and materials in
making the construction work is done efficiently,
safely and in an environmentally sensitive and
sustainable way.
Roles and Responsibility of Construction
Engineering and Management

• Supervise and monitor the progress of the project


• Supervise the construction activities of the
contractor and its subcontractors, and with the
suppliers
• Responsible for managing the workings of various
other entities involved in the project.
• Responsible for providing expert supervision from
beginning to end while also keeping the project
running on or ahead of schedule and within budget
• They should ensure customer satisfaction
• Take initiatives in order to accomplish a project
• Negotiate (re-negotiate if ever) commitments with
the customer
• Responsible for the supply of the materials,
material handling
• Responsible for the project cost estimating and
scheduling, financial planning, labor coordination
and supervision
They should maintain site records and documents like:

i. Layout plans
ii. Contract documents
iii.Time and progress chart
iv. Work diary
v. Contractor’s order book
vi. Records of tests
vii.Progress report
viii.Measurement book
Duties
In planning or supervising a particular project. They
should considered this three concerns:

1)Planning- the relationship between the work operation


and the sequence in they are to be performed
2)Execution-
3)Reporting/recording

Considerations on Buying of Materials

A purchase order form should contain all the


information's such as:

1. Description of the materials


2. Quantities required
3. Time and place of delivery
4. Unit price
5. Amount
Procurement

The following are major procurement factor:

1. Quality of the materials


2. Quantity of the materials
3. Time of delivery
4. Price of the materials

The first three generally established for the purchasing department


and its responsibility in this connection then become principally a matter of
securing reliable suppliers who will maintain the factors established.
The fourth factor which is price is essentially the responsibility of the
purchasing department who has contact with outside market is in the
better position to determine what is the fair price.
Project construction life cycle requires
various requirements such as:

1. The site must be found and boundaries relocated


2. Plan must be drawn
3. Plan must be approved by the owner
4. Building permit must be secured
5. Succession of personnel
