The Normal Distribution

Mary Charisse P. Nioko

A normal distribution is
a distribution of a
continuous random
variable whose graph is
bell-shaped curve called
normal curve.

The appearance
of the bell-shaped
curve still depends
on two values, the
mean , and the
standard deviation
of the distribution.
Properties of the Normal Curve
1.Its curve is bell-shaped.
2.Its curve is symmetric about the y-axis.
3.The mean, median, and mode coincide at the center
of the distribution.
4.The distribution is unimodal.
5.Its curve is asymptotic with respect to the x-axis.
6.The total area under its curve is 1.
Standard Normal Distribution
A Standard
Normal Distribution
is a normal
distribution with
mean of 0 and
standard deviation of
1. - 0 +
Finding the
Areas under
the Normal
Curve
Find the area to the left of z = 1.45
Step 1:
Locate 1.4 on the leftmost column of the Z table.
Step 2:
On the topmost row, locate 0.05.
Step 3:
The value corresponding to the intersection of 1.4 and
0.05 is the area to the left of z.
EXAMPLE 1
Given
   the standard normal distribution, find
Fact Check!

 The z-table show the areas to the left of the normal

curve.
 Finding the area “to the left” or “below” a z-value
is the same thing.
Let’s Practice!

 Find the area below z = 1.25

Area = 0.8944

 Find the area to the left of z = 1.03

Area = 0.8485
Finding the Area under the Normal
Curve

 To find the area to the right of a z value, subtract its

area to the left from 1. (1– Area to the left)
 Finding the area “to the right” or “above” a z value
is the same thing!
Find the area to the right of z = -1

 The area to the left/below z = -1 is 0.1587.

 1 – 0.1587 = 0.8413
 The area to the right/above z = -1 is 0.8413
Finding the Area under the Normal
Curve

 To find the area between two z values, determine

the area to the left of both z values.

 Subtract the two areas. (Area 1 – Area 2)

Find the area between z = 1.25 and z =
0.35

 The area to the left of 1.25 is 0.8944

 The area to the left of 0.35 is 0.5987
 Subtract the two areas, 0.8944 – 0.5987
 The area between 1.25 and 0.35 is 0.2957
Let’s Practice!

 Find the area below 0.04

 Find the area above 1.36
 Find the area between 1.17 and 2.3
