What is Coaching

What is Coaching
• "coaching" is the process of helping people develop their
capacity to think about things (such as problems, people,
relationships, customers, products, services, the future) in
new and creative ways so that they can accomplish what they
really want to accomplish. 
Elements of coaching
• An individual/group/team with willingness to be
coached and making themselves "coachable"
• A fully competent leader who is fully committed
to the success of this person/group/team
• Clarity and a clear sense of urgency by the
individual/group/team about a commitment to
something specific and big
• A choice and commitment to continue learning
through discipline and practice
Types of Coaching
• Directive Coaching
• Non- Directive Coaching
Directive Coaching
The Coach takes the position of an expert. He/she tells the
coachee what needs to be done and how to do it..

• Advantage:
1. It saves time.
2. It gives the coachee a model that works in this situation
3. It provides a framework for clear expectations of the
outcome..
• Disadvantages:
1. It tend to setup a parent child communication pattern.
2. It might not address the need of an individual
3. It can inhibit creativity and close of communication

Non-Directive Coaching
• In non directive coaching, coach and coachee creates a
partnership to solve a problem. The coach takes the position
of a facilitator to accomplish the outcome. The coachee decide
on the appropriate goals
• Advantages:
1. It Addresses the need and desire of the coachee
2. It doesn't require the coach to be expert of the content
3. It doesn't require as much upfront preparation.
• Disadvantages:
1. It requires coach to be excellent listener and facilitator.
2. It tend to require a long commitment of coaching time.
3. It puts more responsibility on the coachee to find out
solutions and carry on.
Examples
• What do you think the problem is?
• How often does this happens
• If you try this again, what would you do differently?
• What would you like to achieve?
• What option you think are the best?
• What kind of support do you need?
