1B.2 Thrombocytes

The document discusses blood clotting and provides the following key points: 1. Blood clotting is the mechanism by which blood thickens and forms clots to stop bleeding when blood vessels are damaged. 2. Platelets and the coagulation cascade system are involved in the blood clotting mechanism. Platelets stick together with red blood cells to start clot formation. 3. Blood clots can block arteries and cause heart attacks or strokes if a clot blocks blood flow to the brain. Drugs that affect platelets, thrombin, or fibrin breakdown can influence the blood clotting process.

Blood Clotting

Sunday, November 15, 2020

• Must: To understand how blood-clotting
mechanism works.
• Should: To understand the working of
platelets and the Cascade system
• Could: to relate the blood clotting
mechanism with the building up of plaque
in the arteries

Blood clotting
Substances in blood clotting
How do we stop bleeding?
• When we are cut, our blood comes out for
a few m------------ and then stops.
• The blood becomes th---------r and then it
becomes so-------.
• We call the thick blood a “Blood c----”
• We call the solid blood a “S---”
• This is a very important mechanism.
WHY?
Platelets and fibrin stick Red cells
together to start the blood clotting.
Anticoagulants, antiplatelets and thrombolytics are drugs used to treat blood clots.

(i)  One anticoagulant binds to the active site of thrombin.

Explain how this drug reduces blood clotting.

(ii)  Molecules on the surface of platelets enable them to bind to other molecules.

One of the antiplatelet drugs affects molecules on the surface of platelets.

iii)  One thrombolytic drug converts plasminogen into the active enzyme, plasmin. Plasmin
breaks down fibrin.
Explain how this drug reduces the formation of blood clots.

Thrombin inhibitors are drugs that have an effect on the time taken for blood to clot.
Explain why thrombin inhibitors affect the time taken for blood to clot.
