Types of electrical conduits.

Metallic Conduit
Rigid Steel Conduit ( RMC )
Intermediate Metallic Conduit ( IMC )
Electrical Metallic Tubing ( EMT )

Non – Metallic Conduit
Polyvinyl Chloride Pipe (PVC)
Rigid Metal
Conduit

Has the thickest wall,

which makes it the
heaviest steel conduit.
Intermediate
Metallic Conduit
(IMC)

Has a thinner wall and

weighs less than RMC
Electrical Metallic
Tubing (EMT)

The lightest-weight
steel conduit
manufactured.
Non – metallic Conduit
Polyvinyl Chloride Pipe
(PVC)

Considered the lightest

in weight compared to
steel conduit materials,
and usually lower in
cost than other forms of
conduit
Proper uses and installation of conduits.

RMC, IMC, EMT and PVC is permitted to be used in:

o All atmospheric Conditions and Occupancies
o Corrosion Environment
o Cinder Fill
o Wet Location
PVC shall not be used in the following:
o
Where subject physical damage.
o
Protected from corrosion solely by enamel.
o
In cinder concrete or cinder fills subject to permanent
moisture.
o
In hazardous (classified) location except as permitted.
o
Support luminaries (fixtures).
o
Where practicable, dissimilar metals in contact
anywhere in the system.
EMT shall not be used in the following:
