LESSON 22 − WATER POLLUTIO
At the end of the lesson the students should be able to;

-Identify the definition and major sources of water

pollution
-Discuss the types of water pollution and different effect
of it in the environment
- Assess the treatment of water and appreciate the role
of
people and government to combat water pollution
• Water is very important; without this,
man, plants and animals cannot live.

The bodies of living organism are

composed of 70 to 90 percent of water.

The earth we live is covered mostly by

water, the ocean, is a valuable source of
energy, food and mineral resources.
WATER
POLLUTIO
N
WATER POLLUTION

• Is the contamination of water bodies,

usually as a result of human
activity.

• Water pollution is a result when

contaminations are introduced into
the natural environment.
• The lack or total absence of
efficient and extensive sewerage
systems has converted rivers,
canals and other bodies of
water in highly urbanized into
veritable open sewers.
- 46 out of 228 rivers are polluted.

-Agno and Bued River in Northern

Luzon are considered as almost
Dead rivers because of water
pollution caused by minimg firms in
Benguet
Major sources of Water
Pollution
• Domestic Waste
• Slaughterhouse
s
• Industries
• Agriculture
TYPES
OF WATER
POLLUTION
A. Municipal Sewage/ Oxygen
Demanding Waste

Waste water of communities (urines

and feces)
Sewage -considered as the most
serious water pollutant
Oxygen is important in water, it is
used to oxidize or decompose
organic materials . In the process,
produce simpler substances such
as CO2.
These products are used by
plants and other microorganisms
for their growth.
TYPES OF WATER
POLLUTION
B. Infectious Agents
 Water-borne micro-organism or
insects breeding on water can
cause several disease including
cholera, typhoid, Gastro- intestinal
diseases.
TYPES OF WATER
POLLUTION
C. Plant Nutrients
 Nitrogen, phrospherous, and
potassium are the 3 most elements
for plants growth but it is also in the
domestic waste, detergents and
fertilizers run offs.
TYPES OF WATER
POLLUTION
D. Toxic Chemicals
 Heavy metals -interfere with
biochemical process (ex: mercury, lead,
cadmium etc.)

Oil Slicks -Thin layer of oil floating on

the surface of oceans.
TYPES OF WATER
POLLUTION
E. Persistent Substances
 Improper or excessive use of
pesticides in agriculture frequently
leads to contaminations of
irrigation canals.
TYPES OF WATER
POLLUTION
F. Radioactive Materials
 Come from mine tailings and nuclear
waste

G. Thermal Pollution
 Heat from thermal or nuclear power plants
reduces the solubility of oxygen in water
TYPES OF WATER
POLLUTION
H. Sediment, Sands and Silt
 Forestdestruction or Aquatic (marine)
destruction are connected.

I. Inorganic Substance
 These inorganic substances render
agriculture soil unproductive, makes water
turbid and adversely affect aquatic life
Example of Sediments, Sands and Silts.
EFFECTS OF
WATER
Human
Health
Mercury poisoning symptoms are:
headache, excessive fatigue, amnesia or
loss of memory, impairment of speech, and
disturbance in muscle coordination.
In pregnant it can affect the unborn child.
The mercury poisoning is called
MINAMATA DISEASE.
-
Itai-Itai
-unbearable pain as their bone
brittle.

Lead
-can cause anemia, destruction of
red blood cells, and disturbances in
nervous system.
Ecosyste
m
Eutrophication increase in nutrient load
of a body of water such as lakes.
Discharge of sewage in from domestic and
industrial waste as well as excess fertilizers
into the lake increase further the nutrient
load of the lake. This is what we called
Cultural Eutrophication.
• Oil Pollution
- coming from spills and natural oil
leakages brings harm to animals and also
to man.
• Careless discarding of nylon fishing nets,
plastic straps and myriads of other objects
made from non-biodegradable plastic have
caused the death of fish and other
animals in the ocean.
Economic Cost of
Water Pollution
•Contamination of vast areas of
water may have significant
impact on the quality of life in
the future.
TREATMENT
OF WATER
Water hardness
2 types of water hardness

Temporary -It can be eliminated by

boiling water.

Permanent -These salt cannot be

removed by boiling.
Purification of
Drinking Water
Sewage Treatment
ROLE OF PEOPLE AND GOVERNMEN
TO COMBAT WATER POLLUTION
• Republic Act 3931 of 1964 -known as
Pollution Control Law.
• NPCC- National Pollution Control
Commission
• PD 424- created National Water
Resources Council (NWRC)
NWRC (National Water Resources
Council)
DOH (Department of Health)
FPA (Fertilizer and Pesticide
Authority)
PAGASA (Philippine Athmospheric,
Geophysical, and Astronomical
Services Administration)
MWSS (Metropolitan Waterworks
and Sewage System)

ACTIVITIES/ASSESSM
ENTS
1. Slogan Making. Each student will choose one of
the types and effects of water pollution then
they will create their own slogan creatively. It
may form of digital or paper work.
