CLASSICAL PERIOD

Classical period pieces.
• The Classical period in music is a period within the
history of Western art music from about 1750 to
1820. The period saw the direction of a form which
ahs dominated instrumental composition to the
present day: sonata form. With it came the
development of the modern concerto, symphony,
sonata, trio, and quartet. The piano was
undoubtedly the primary instrument used by
composers during the Classical period is
characterized be a near-obsession with structural
clarity.
What is a Classical Music?
• The term classical music has two different meanings. It is
used as a general word to describe Western Art Music.
• It is also to describe a period within the history of Western
art music from about 1750 to 1820. when composers
such as Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and
Ludwig van Beethoven were writing music

• The Classical period has been called the “Golden Age of
Music” because it was this time that the major form of
classical music – the symphony, concerto, sonata, and
string quartet – were fully developed. Instrumental works
of the classical period usually consists of several
movements that contrast in tempo and character. There
are often 4 movements, arranged as follows:
• Fast movement, slow movement, dance-related
movement and fast movement
Multi-movement instrumental form
• 1. Sonata form – an instrumental form usually consisting
of three or four complete movements in contrasting
tempos. It came form the Italian word sounare, meaning
“to sound”. It is usually a composition for solo instrument.
There are different kind of Sonata:
• Sonata pian’e forte – sonata for piano
• Sonata da chiesa – church sonata
• Sonata da camera – chamber sonata
Multi-movement instrumental form
• 2. String quartet – a sonata for a small group of players
(violin, viola and cello).
• 3. Symphony – a sonata for the orchestra
• 4. Concerto – three-movement sonata for soloist with an
orchestra
• 5. Overture – an instrument music played before an opera
and has three sections, a fast intro, a slow middle section,
and a fast ending.
Single Movement instrumental form
• 1. Binary form – a form of movement on two principal
themes or divided into two distinct or contrasted sections.
• 2. Ternary form – a three-part form (ABA or ABC)
Minuet and Trio – a form typically employed as the third
movement of classical symphonies, string quartets and other
works. It originated as stately, dignified dance in which the
dancing couple exchange curtsies and bows. It is in the triple
meter and usually in moderate tempo. The movement has
an ABA form, which A (minuet), B (trio) and A (minuet)
Single Movement instrumental form
• 3. Rondo – features a tuneful main theme (A) which
returns several times in alternation with other themes.
Common rondo patterns are A B A C A and A B A C A B A.
the main theme is usually lively, pleasing, and simple to
remember and the listener can easily recognized its return.
• 4. Theme and variations – a form in which the basic
musical idea or the theme is repeated over and over and is
changed each time is repeated.
As the classical period drew to a
close, the period expressed a more
personal feelings as evident in its
dance forms like formalized minuet
which became the queen of all dances
and romantic waltz.
