INTRODUCTION
 Blu-ray Disc (official abbreviation BD)
 optical disc storage medium to supersede the DVD format.
 standard physical 12 cm plastic optical disc,
 developed by Blu-ray Disc Association, group representing makers
of consumer electronics, computer hardware, and motion pictures.
 During the high definition optical disc format war, Blu-ray Disc
competed with the HD DVD format.
Toshiba supported HD DVD, conceded in February 2008,
releasing their own Blu-ray Disc player in late 2009.
 As of June 2009, more than 1,500 Blu-ray Disc titles available in
Australia and the United Kingdom.
2,500 in the United States and Canada.
In Japan, as of July 2010, more than 3,300 titles have
been released.
Contd…)
The companies that have jointly established the BD specifications are:
 Hitachi, Ltd
 LG Electronics
 Matsushitha Electrical Industrial Co. Ltd
 Mitsubishi Electric Corporarion
 Pioneer Corporation
 Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd
 Sony
 Thomson
 Royal Phillips Electronics
 Sharp Corporation
THE NAME
BLU - RAY
=
“blue” for the color of the laser
+
“ray” for optical ray.
-------------------------------------------------------
The “e” in “blue” was purposefully left off by the
manufacturers
(an everyday word cannot be a trademark).
EVOLUTION
 VHS: analog
DVD: digital
BD: high-definition

 Enables recording, rewriting,

and playback of high-
definition video

 Capable of storing
information that the DVD
and CD are not capable of
holding
HISTORY

 1st GENERATION:
Compact disc (CD): --- 650/700 MB
It is with us for over 20 years.
Wavelength of laser which reads data: 780 nm
Color of laser: Red
 2nd GENERATION:
Digital versatile disc (DVD): --- 4.7 GB
It offers high quality sound and video than CD.
Wavelength of laser which reads data: 650 nm
Color of laser: Red
History
 3rd GENERATION:
Blu-ray disc (BD): --- 25/50 GB
-Next generation optical disc format.
-Developed by blu-ray disc association (which includes
Apple, Hitachi, HP, LG, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips,
Samsung, Sharp, Sony)
-Wavelength of laser which reads data: 405 nm
-Color of laser: Blue-violet which was developed by
SHUJI NAKAMURA
at NICHIA CORPORATION
FEATURES
With BD we can:
 Record HDTV without any quality loss.
 Instantly skip to any spot on disc.
 Record any program while watching other on the disc.
 Create playlists.
 Edit or reorder programs recorded on the disc.
 Automatically search for an empty on the disc to avoid recording
over the program.
 Access to web to download subtitles and other extra features.
 And many more…..
FORMAT OF BD
It comes in four different formats:
 BD-ROM (read only) : for reading recorded
content.
 BD-R (recordable) : for PC data storage.
 BD-RW (rewritable) : for PC data storage.
 BD-RE (rewritable) : for HDTV (high
definition television) recording.
TYPES OF BD
 SINGLE LAYER: Can hold data upto
25/27 GB that means 2hrs of HD video or
about 13hrs of standard video.

 DOUBLE LAYER: Can hold data upto

50GB that means 4.5hrs of HD video or
more than 20hrs of standard video.
WORKING OF BLU-RAY DISC

 Discs store digitally encoded video and audio

Information in pits , spiral grooves that run from the
center of the disc to its edges .

 A laser reads the other side of these pits

to play the movie or program that is
stored on the disc.

 The more data that is contained on a disc, the

smaller and more closely packed the pits must be.
WORKING OF BLU-RAY DISC Contd…

The smaller beam focuses more precisely, enabling it to read

information recorded in pits that are not only 0.15 microns long
this is more than twice as small as the pits on a DVD.

Regional codes

Regions for the Blu-ray standard:

  A/1: The Americas (except Greenland), and their dependencies,
East Asia (except mainland China and Mongolia), and Southeast Asia.
   B/2: Africa, Middle East, Southwest Asia, Europe (except Belarus,
Russia and Ukraine), Australia, New Zealand, and their dependencies.
   C/3: Central Asia, East Asia (mainland China and Mongolia only),
South Asia, Eastern Europe, and their dependencies.
BLU-RAY ‘S DURABILITY
ADVANTAGE
 Various hard coating technologies make Blu ray disc most
durable and family-friendly.
 Hard coating technology provides resistances to:
 Finger prints
 Marks
 Scratches
 Dust

 Much more ROBUST than today’s polycarbonate-based

CD/DVD’s (and HD DVD’s).
Blu-ray Density Advantage
 Higher density enables
better data seek times.
 Shorter to travel for
same amount of data
results in the faster data
seek.
 Better for random
access of data.
ADVANTAGES OF BD

 With BD we can:
 Record HDTV without any quality loss
 More storage capacity on a disc of the same size
 High data transfer rate
 Available in different versions likeBD- ROM, BD-R and
BD-RE
 Backward compatible
DISADVANTAGES

 Cost for recordable 25gb BD disc for 17 $

 Cost for recordable 50 gb BD disc for 34$
 Cost for rewriteable 60$ appox
 Cost of bddiscplayer 300$-400$
Do More With…
 More capacity , Density and Performance.
 More Industry Support/Consumer Reach.
 More Durable.
 More interactive user experience.
 More flexible content protection.
