Diorama Report

Dioramas are three-dimensional scale models that depict scenes. They originated in 1822 as viewing devices in France and were first exhibited in museums in 1893 in Stockholm. There are several types of dioramas including architectural dioramas that show detailed miniature buildings and landscapes, entertainment dioramas that recreate scenes from movies and games, and museum dioramas used in education to dramatize science, history, and wildlife. Modern dioramas combine traditional modeling with new technologies like 3D printing and electronics to create highly detailed scenes.

Diorama

a model representing a
scene with three-
dimensional figures, either
in miniature or as a large-
scale museum exhibit.
History
The word "diorama" originated in 1823 as a type of picture-viewing device, from the French
in 1822. The word literally means "through that which is seen", from the Greek di-
"through" + orama "that which is seen, a sight". The diorama was invented by Louis
Daguerre and Charles Marie Bouton, first exhibited in Paris in July 1822 and in London on
September 29, 1823. The meaning "small-scale replica of a scene, etc." is from 1902.

One of the first uses of dioramas in a museum was in Stockholm, Sweden, where

the Biological Museum opened in 1893.

Sheperd Paine, a prominent hobbyist, popularized the modern miniature diorama beginning
in the 1970s.
Types of Dioramas
Architectural Dioramas

The details of architectural dioramas are nothing short of

phenomenal. The scaled-down view of buildings and
landscaping, whether from a city block or an entire city are
mind-captivating.
Entertainment Dioramas
Immerse yourself into a three-dimensional world of fun and
fiction. Whether imagining your favorite movie scene, video
game set, or a futuristic fantasy land — these can all be
accomplished with highly detailed entertainment dioramas.
Museum Dioramas
Museums and educational institutions use dioramas as
educational tools to dramatically impact the appeal to viewers
through 3D representations of scenes. These special exhibits
can depict science, space, natural history scenes, animals,
environments, wildlife aquariums, special exhibits, and
historical events.
Technology and Materials
Today's technologies are making more impressive next
generation dioramas. Combining tried-and-tested traditional
model-making with new 3D printing, 3D CNCing, 3D cutting,
3D digital, and new electronics capabilities are allowing model
makers to build some really awesome dioramas.
