THE PSYCHOLOGY OF CHANCE ENCOUNTERS AND LIFE PATHS

by: Albert Bandura, 1982

CHANCE ENCOUNTER

 Psychological theories have neglected the fundamental issue of

what determines’s people’s life paths. In a chance encounter the
separate chains of events have their own casual determinants, but
their intersection occurs fortuitously rather than through deliberate
plan. Some fortuitous encounters touch only lightly, others leave
more lasting effects, and still others branch people into new
trajectories of life. A science of pyschology cannot shed much light
on the occurrence of fortuitous encounters, but it can provide the
basis for predicting the impact they will have on human lives.
ALBERT BANDURA

 He was born on December 4, 1925 in the small

town of Mundare in northern Alberta, Canada.
 He is the husband of Virginia Varns, an instructor
in the nursing school and a father of their two
children.
 He is an American psychologist and originator of
social cognitive theory who is probably best
known for his modeling study on aggression,
referred to as the Bobo doll experiment which
demonstrated that children can learn behaviours
through the observation of adults.
CHANCE ENCOUNTER AS DETERMINANTS OF LIFE PATHS

 CHANCE ENCOUNTER-
defined as an unintended meeting of persons unfamiliar to each other.
PERSONAL DETERMINANTS OF THE
IMPACT OF CHANCE ENCOUNTER
ENTRY SKILLS

If any person one meets by chance is to have

an influence (good or bad) on one’s life, one’s
needs personal skills that will allow one to
interact and engage that individual effectively.
EMOTIONAL TIES

The stronger the emotional ties between

people who meet through chance encounter,
the more likely it is that those meetings will
have significant impacts on later outcomes.
VALUES AND PERSONAL STANDARDS

The more consistent one’s values are

with those of the person encountered
by chance , the greater the possibility
that the relationship will continue.
SOCIAL DETERMINANTS OF THE IMPACT
OF CHANCE ENCOUNTER
MILIEU REWARDS

Ifa chance encounter leads to a successful

outcome, one is likely to pursue again the
social conditions that produced the
encounter in the first place.
MILIEU REACH AND CLOSEDNESS

 Chance encounter have the greatest potential when dealing with

the milieu in which individual firmly hold onto beliefs because
they serve valuable function; give structure, direction and
purpose.
 When milieu is closed it is viewed as being more endearing and
influential which can lead to a person feeling more connected
early on to the group or individual they have encountered.
PSYCHOLOGICAL CLOSEDNESS

The more consistent one’s beliefs are with

beliefs of those one encounters by chance,
the more attracted one may be to those
persons or groups and to the life paths they
can open
FOSTERING VALUED FUTURES

 A strong sense of personal agency requires development of competencies,

self- percepts of efficacy and self regulatory capabilities for exercising self-
directedness( Bandura, 1982). These types of personal resources expand
freedom of action and enable people to serve as causal contributors to their
own life course by selecting, influencing and constructing their own
circumtances. Mastering the tools of personal agency does not necessarily
assured desired future. But with such skills people are better able to provide
supports and direction for their actions, to capitalize on planned or fortuitous
opportunities, to resist social traps that lead down detrimental paths, and to
disengage themselves from such predicaments should they become
enmeshed in them.
