Variation
Variation
- A change in the form, position,
condition or amount of something.
- It is the act or process of being
varied.
- A change in one variable may result
to a significant change in the other.

S.Y. 2020 - 2021
Types of Variation

1. Direct Variation
2. Inverse Variation
3. Joint Variation
4. Combined Variation

Direct Variation

S.Y. 2020 - 2021
Direct Variation
Direct Variation
- It is a relationship between two variables
in which one is a constant multiple of the other.
- In particular, when a variable changes,
the other also changes in proportion to the
first. So, for every variable x & y, it states that:
“As x increases, y also increases”
“As x decreases, y also decreases”

S.Y. 2020 - 2021
Direct Variation
Situations illustrating Direct Variation:
1. The amount of water to the space in a
particular container.
2. The amount of paint to be used to the area
of the wall.
3. The amount of money to raised in a
concert to the number of tickets sold.
4. The rate of fatality to the number of covid
positive.

Dela Paz National High School – Grade 9 14

S.Y. 2020 - 2021
Direct Variation
It is Mathematical relationship between two
variables that can be expressed by an equation in
which one variable is equal to a constant times the
other.
y = kx
where: y – dependent variable
x – independent variable
k – constant of variation

Dela Paz National High School – Grade 9 15

S.Y. 2020 - 2021
Direct Variation

There is a direct variation whenever a
situation produces pairs of numbers in which
their ratio is constant.
The following statements are used to
illustrate direct variation: y = kx
“y varies directly as x”
“y is directly proportional to x”
“y is proportional t x”

2.The weight (W) of an object is

directly proportional to its
mass (m).

W = km
Activity 1: Translate the following statements into a Direct Variation

3.The volume (V) of a cylinder

varies directly as its height (h).

V = kh
Activity 1: Translate the following statements into a Direct Variation

4.The cost of electricity (C) varies

directly as the number of
kilowatt-hour consumption (l).

A = ks 2
Activity 1: Translate the following statements into a Direct Variation

S.Y. 2020 - 2021
How to translate table of values, graphs and Mathematical
Equation into a Direct Variation Equation?
Steps:
1. Translate or express the direct variation
equation or simply use the equation: y = kx
2. Determine the values of the dependent
variable(y) and the independent variable(x).
3. Solve for the constant of variation (k).
4. Write the equation of variation by substituting
the value of k.
