TOTAL INTERNAL

REFLECTION BY
LASER POINTER
Introduction
Whenever a ray of incident light travels from one
medium to another, its path is changed i.e. it gets
refracted.
If the ray travels from denser medium to rarer medium,
it suffers deviation away from the normal at the point
of incidence. As the angle of incidence is increased,
the angle of refraction also keeps on increasing. At a
certain angle of incidence, called the critical angle, the
refracted ray grazes along the surface of separation i.e.
angle of refraction becomes just go. If the angle of
incidence is further increased, no refraction takes
place. Instead such a ray gets reflection inside the
medium itself. This phenomenon is called total internal
reflection.

Refraction
The phenomenon of bending of light when it
come from one medium to another medium is
called refraction. In physic, refraction is the
change in direction of a wave passing from one
medium to another or from a gradual change in
the medium. Refraction of light is the most
commonly observed phenomenon, but other
waves such as sound waves and water waves also
experience refraction. How much a wave is
refracted is determined by the change in wave
speed and the initial direction of wave
propagation relative to the direction of change in
speed.

Total Internal Reflection
Total internal reflection is the phenomenon of
reflection of light which occurs when a ray of light
traveling in a denser medium is incident at the
interface of the two media at an angle greater than the
critical angle for that pair of media.
Formula of Total Internal Reflection

Total internal reflection n1/n2=sinr/sini

Critical angle, Ө sinƟ=n2/n1

Conclusion
1. Law of Reflection is verified using this
method.
2. Law of Refraction is also verified using this
method & Refractive index of glass is also
calculated.
3. Refractive index of glass is found to be
1.0443 using this method which is very less.
4. Total internal Reflection phenomenon is also
studied using this method and critical angle for
glass prism is 400.
