Essay Writing

Topic and Thesis Statement

Objectives
• distinguish the difference between thesis statement, title, and fact
• learn how to narrow down topics
• choose a controlling idea that can be supported
• determine a strategy of development for the essay
• create an appropriate thesis statement
Thesis Statement
What is a thesis statement?
"A thesis statement gives the main idea of the essay. It tells
what the writer intends to prove, defend, or explain about the
topic."

-Scarry & Scarry, 2010

The thesis statement should have your viewpoint

Your thesis statement will show how you intend to treat the topic. This can be
done in a variety of ways. Like the topic sentence, the thesis statement will have
a controlling idea. The thesis statement is also the most important sentence of
your essay and can usually be found at the end of your first paragraph.

Do not confuse the thesis statement with a title or a simple fact. A title is usually
a phrase, not a complete sentence. A fact is an information that can be proved
easily and does not need to be argued. It does not present a personal viewpoint
so it cannot be used as a thesis statement.

Narrowing Your Topic

You will get to choose your own topic for this essay. However, if
your topic is too broad, you will have a harder time organizing your
points and doing research. It's important to be able to narrow down
your topic so that it is one that will fit properly into an essay that
you are capable of writing.

Choosing a Controlling Idea that can be
Supported

Just like the topic sentence, the controlling idea in a thesis

statement is your opinion or viewpoint on your topic. It has to be
something that you can argue or defend. Often it will have an
adjective to describe what you think about the topic.
