If the 3rd term of the arithmetic is 13 and the
Example 9th term is 37. Write the first nine terms of the
sequence.

SOLUTIO Note:
N:
Given: + (n – 1 )d Use the nth term formula to solve the
37 n=7 37+ (7 – 1 )d difference(d).
= 13 d = ___ 37+ 6d The nth term is the last term
37 6d Since we don’t have , we used 13 as the . The,
24 6d from 13 you count the terms up to the last term
= 6𝑑
6 that’s why we have 7 as the value of n. Notice
d =4 that it is multiplied by d, wherein d stands for
difference. The is 37 which is the last term.
Substitute the given to the formula in perform the
operation.

SOLUTIO
N:
d =4 To find the up to , use the formula:
To find the value of and , = d==,
Use the formula: d=,
,-d
Hence, 13 + 4 =17 25 + 4 = 29
17 + 4 = 21 29 + 4 = 33
13 – 4 = 9 21 + 4 = 25 33 + 4 = 37
9–4=5

Therefore, the sequence is 5 9 13 17 21 25 29 33 37

Find the sum of the terms of

arithmetic sequence given the first

and last terms.
Arithmetic Series

Arithmetic series is the sum of all the terms in an

arithmetic sequence. The formula to be used given the
first and last terms is:
= ∙ (+) where n = the number of terms,
= the first term,
and = the last term.
Example Find the sum of the first 100
1
terms.
8, 12, 16, 20, 24, …?
𝑎 1 𝑎 2 𝑎 3 𝑎 4 𝑎5 𝑎 100 d=4
SOLUTION b. Solve for the sum of the
a. apply the general
: term of an arithmetic arithmetic sequence
sequence = (+)
an = a1 + (n-1) d
a100 = 8 + (100-1) 4 = (8+404)

a100 = 8+ (99) 4 = 50(412)

a100 = 8 + 396 = 20, 600
a100 = 404
Example
Find the sum of the terms from the
2
third up to the 20th term.
5, 11, 17, 23, 29, …?
𝑎 1 𝑎 2 𝑎 3 𝑎 4 𝑎5 𝑎 20

In this example, we have to find the sum of the terms from

the third up to the 20th term. Therefore, we re-label the
instead of 5 is the first term, we use 17 as the first term ()
because 17 is the 3rd term and the last term would be since
we remove the terms.
5, 11, 17, 23, 29, …?
Example
Find the sum of the terms from the
2
third up to the 20th term.
5, 11, 17, 23, 29, …? d=6
SOLUTION
a. apply the general b. Solve for the sum of the
: term of an arithmetic arithmetic sequence
sequence
an = a1 + (n-1) d = (+)
a18 = 17 + (18-1) 6 = (17+119)
a18 = 17+ (17) 6 = (136)
a18 = 17 + 102 = 9(136)
a18 = 119 = 1, 224
Example
Find the sum of the arithmetic
3
sequence.
-1 + 1 + 3 + 5 + 7 + 9 + 11 + 13 + 15 +17
SOLUTION
:
(-1 + 17 ) = 16
-1 + 1 + 3 + 5 + 7 + 9 + 11 + 13 + 15 +17
(1 + 15 ) = 16
(3 +13 ) = 16 n = 10
𝒏
𝒂𝟏 𝒂𝒏 =𝟓
( 5+ 11 = 16 𝟐

( 7 + 9 = 16
80
Or simply add the first and the last term then multiply by 5: ( -1 +17) = 16 (5) = 80
