PERPETUATION OF LIFE

The capability of something to cause itself to

continue to exist.
REPRODUCTION IN ANIMALS
OBJECTIVES:

At the end of the lesson, the students are expected to:

1. 1. Identify the type of asexual and sexual reproduction in animals
2. 2. Describe the different ways of how representative animals
reproduce
3. 3. Realize the importance of reproduction to maintain the continuity
of life

What is reproduction?

- In a general sense reproduction is one of

the most important concepts in biology: it
means making a copy, a likeness, and
thereby providing for the continued
existence of species.
- The production of new individuals from
their parents is known as reproduction.
Modes of reproduction in animals

Animals can reproduce through

ASEXUAL SEXUAL
REPRODUCTION REPRODUCTION
Asexual Reproduction
 - defined as the formation of new individuals from the cells
of a single parent.
• - it does not involve the union of gametes (sperm cell and
egg cell).
• - The resulting offspring is similar or identical to the parent
and without the need for a mate, they are able to reproduce.
Animals may reproduce asexually through the methods of;

FRAGMENTATION BINARY FISSION BUDDING

PARTHENOGENESIS TRANSVERSE
FISSION
Fragmentation

Example:
Starfish

- pieces of the parent breaks off and develop into a new animal
Binary Fission

Example:

Amoeba - reproduces by the

common asexual reproduction
method called binary
fission. After replicating its
genetic material through
mitotic division, the cell
divides into two equal sized
daughter cells.

• - process in which an organism divides into two and grow

into a new organism
Budding

Hydra, genus of
invertebrate freshwater
animals of the class
Hydroza.

- process outgrowth or callus projecting from the parent and

eventually buds off
• Parthenogenesis

- Mechanism of asexual reproduction

in which female offspring develops
from unfertilized eggs

- is derived from the Greek words for

“virgin birth,” and several insect
species including aphids, bees, and
ants are known to reproduce by
parthenogenesis.
Transverse Fission
Fission that involves direct reproduction in which each portion
regenerates missing parts to become a complete new animal
depending on the axis of separation.

What is Fertilization?

• - The first step in the process of

reproduction is the fusion of a sperm and
an ovum. When sperms come in contact
with an egg, one of the sperms may fuse
with the egg. Such fusion of the egg and
the sperm is called fertilization.
Sexual Reproduction
• - the perpetuation of a new organism from two organism with the use
gametes
• - male gametes (sperm cell) and female gametes (egg cell) form a diploid
cell called zygote containing two sets of chromosomes (46 chromosomes,
22 pairs of autosomes, and a pair of sex chromosomes)

The zygote is the beginning of a

new individual.
There are different types of sexual reproduction in animals.

EXTERNAL EXTERNAL
FERTILIZITION FERTILIZITION

Oviparity Viviparity
Ovoviviparity
External Fertilization – The union of egg and sperm occurs
outside the female reproductive tract.

Examples: Fish (aquatic animals except mammals and sharks) and

Frogs.
Internal Fertilization – the union of an egg and sperm cell during
sexual reproduction inside the female body. Internal fertilization brings
more control to the female with reproduction.

Internal Fertilization has 3 types namely;

Oviparity – oviparous animals release eggs outside the body after
fertilization and it would complete its development outside the mother’s
body.
Ovoviviparity – ovoviviparous animals produce eggs like
oviparous animals, but they don’t release outside.
Examples are some species of snakes and sharks.

Viviparity – viviparous animals, the embryo develops to
young ones within the mother.
Examples: Almost all mammals

INSIDE EGG PARENT YOUNG

OVIPAROUS ANIMALS that lay their _____, with little or

no other embryonic development within the ________.

VIVIPAROUS ANIMALS bringing forth live _______ that

have developed _______ the body of the parent.

Asexual reproduction requires only one parent while sexual

reproduction requires two parents.
Note to remember:

Asexual reproduction requires only one

parent while sexual reproduction requires
two parents.

Task to do:
Write an essay answering the question below to realize the
importance of reproduction to maintain the continuity of life.

Question to answer:
How would you explain the relationship of life perpetuation with
the evolution of life?
