THE CELL

INTRODUCTION
All living things that exist on the Earth are
made up of cells. In Latin, the meaning of
the word ‘cell’ is ‘small room’. These small
rooms are not empty but contain
compartments or subunits, that have
some specific function which makes them
distinct from each other, and are known as
organelles. Cell organelles perform
different functions inside the cell. All the
life processes like digestion, respiration,
circulation, excretion, locomotion,
immunity, coordination and synthesis are
carried out by the cells.
The cell is also responsible for providing
structure to our body. Thus, a cell is a
structural and functional unit of life. A
group of cells became a tissue and the
tissues joined together to become an
organ. Then, different organs make a
whole organism.
DISCOVERY OF CELLS
The discovery of cells was made possible by a Dutch tradesman
and scientist, Antonie Van Leeuwenhoek (1632-1723), who
discovered the first simple microscope in which he used only
on lens for magnification.

Robert Hooke in 1665 observed small, thin pieces

kjljjhhuhhhuhuhu of a cork (in the bark of old oak tree) under a microscope. He
He saw very tiny hollow room- like structures which resemble
resembled cells where old monks used to live. By doing modifications,
he modificationds, also developed the compound microscope .

single cell only. The unicellular systems which are specialised in their
organisms are usually smaller and function. Some examples of
simple organisms, due to the multicellular organisms are plants and
presence of one cell. For example, animals.
