What is HIV?
Human Immunodeficiency Virus

• HIV is a virus that attacks the body’s immune


system.
• Over time, the immune system and the body loses
its ability to fight the virus.
• There is NO CURE for HIV.

• But it is TREATABLE with medicine.

• People with HIV who get effective HIV treatment


can live long, healthy lives and protect their
partners.

• If HIV is not treated, it can lead to AIDS.

What is AIDS?
Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome

• AIDS is the final stage of HIV infection.


• Most severe stage. Patients will experience severe
signs and symptoms.

• It can take years for a person infected with HIV to


develop AIDS.
• Without HIV medicines, HIV advances to AIDS in
about 10 to 12 years.
