Essay
Most of Lahoris fail to understand the existence of Istanbul Chowk on the heart of mall road and its useless
sculpture, as it makes no sense, and as there is no precedential linkage in the history of that space. However it
holds immense importance as some of the most important architectural heritage lies on that road ranging from
Colonial Architecture to Indo-Saracenic Architecture. Especially the NCA building, Lahore Museum, and
Punjab University on this site looking onto the Tuillintal Market. This road could itself become an educational
square both for the tourists and the students, foreigners and locals alike. The mall road contains so many
important buildings but it does not have an architectural recognition of its own. Thus the establishment of an
arched gateway will add as a threshold for the square and shall frame the mall road into existence. The
campuses of NCA and PU shall grow into the square filling in some space to educate more people, their
extension following the same design language and not reflection of any modernism. To make the square busy
at some time with hustle and bustle, a Mosque be proposed in Indo- Saracenic style with its minar towering the
square as a complementary composition to the surrounding architecture and a following lawn to accommodate
the flocking people towards prayer. The central part of the cut off road can be designed with landscape and
public seating and activities in mind while the lower end be designed with public community buildings in the
setting which blends in with the function and language of the architecture and can be used a public debate and
speech area or public lecture like talks. This can be joined by some monumental sculptures and designed
gateways that lead the pavements to the surrounding buildings like Museum, PU and NCA. All of this leaving
irregular courtyard like spaces in between but which are framed and increase some curiosity of the visitor.
