VOLCANOES

Objectives:

1. Define Volcano
2. How Volcanoes are formed
3. Discover the exact location of
Volcanoes in the Philippines
What is a Volcano?

A vent, hill or mountain from which

molten or hot rocks with gaseous
material have been ejected
What is a Volcano

Also craters, depressions, hills or

mountains formed by removal of
pre-existing material or by
accumulation of ejected materials
What is a Volcano?

a rupture in the crust of a planetary-

mass object, such as Earth, that
allows hot lava, volcanic ash, and
gases to escape from a magma
chamber below the surface.
Etymology

The word volcano is derived from the

name of Vulcano, a volcanic island in
the Aeolian Islands of Italy whose
name in turn comes from Vulcan, the
god of fire in Roman mythology.
The study of volcanoes is called
volcanology, sometimes spelled
vulcanology.
A magma chamber is a large pool of
liquid rock beneath the surface of
the Earth. The molten rock, or
magma, in such a chamber is less
dense than the surrounding country
rock, which produces buoyant forces
on the magma that tend to drive it
upwards.
How Magma Chambers are formed?

Most magma chambers form through

repeated magma injections,
commonly sills, and gradually expand
and change their shapes.
Parasitic Cone

A small cone-shaped volcano formed

by an accumulation of volcanic
debris.
Sill

A flat piece of rock formed when

magma hardens in a crack in a
volcano.
Vent

An opening in Earth's surface

through which volcanic materials
escape.
Flank

The side of a volcano.

Lava

Molten rock that erupts from a

volcano that solidifies as it cools.
Crater

Molten rock that erupts from a

volcano that solidifies as it cools.
Conduit

An underground passage magma

travels through.
Summit

Highest point, the apex

Throat

Entrance of a volcano. The part of

the conduit that ejects lava and
volcanic ash.
Volcanic Ash

Fragments of lava or rock smaller

than 2 mm in size that are blasted
into the air by volcanic explosions.
Ash Cloud

A cloud of ash formed by volcanic

explosions.
How are Volcanoes Formed?

Volcanoes are formed through

continuous eruptions
How to know if a Volcano is “Dead”
or Inactive?

If it never erupted for 5000 years

Are Potential Volcanic Eruptions
Predictable?

- Noticeable Steaming or fumarolic Activity

- Subtle Swelling of the ground Surface
- An increase in frequency and intensity of
Earthquakes
What is the Pacific Ring of Fire?

This is the zone within the Pacific Ocean that covers a collection of moving
plate edges forming a ring of volcanoes
Trivia!

Around 75% of the world’s active and

dormant volcano are located here
The Most Active Volcanoes in the
Philippines are the following:

Mayon Volcano of Albay

Taal Volcano in Batangas
Kanlaon Volcano in Negros Occidental
Bulusan Volcano in Sorsogon
