Introduction
• Agar Wood typically refers to dense, heavy and aromatic resinous wood
formed in the trees of Aquilaria which belongs to the thymelaeaceae family
of angiosperms.

• Agar wood is the most expensive and valuable tree in the world.

• Agar Wood trees is commonly associated with Aquilaria tree damage and
fungal infection.

• Agar wood has high demand throughout the world as a raw material for
incense, fragrance and drug purposes.
GENERAL OBJECTIVE
To evaluate the Problems and prospects of Agar wood production In Bangladesh in terms of ecological ,economical and
policy levels.

 SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The major objective of the study is the future of Agar wood production In Bangladesh The minor objectives of the
study are as follows:
• To explain the ecological importance of Agar wood production In Bangladesh
• To determine the economical value of Agar wood production In Bangladesh
• To observe the policy guideline in concern of Agar wood production In Bangladesh
Initial Literature Review

• In Bangladesh agar wood naturally grows in north-east & southeastern hills but now
under danger of extinction.

• Experimental Plantation with other species started in early nineties in total 5800Ha
plantation happened in plot plantation.

• Preferable altitude about 500m and slope not more than 45 °. Prefer good drainage
condition to maintain this tree.

• Naturally agar formed after 20 years & found only in 10 trees,

• Singapore, China and Middle-East countries are main importer of agar oil & chips. In
Bangladesh its Scatteredly plant in Moulavibazar, Chittagong & Chittagong Hill
Tracts. Original seed sources from the plant.
Ecological Condition of Agarwood
• Bangladesh has suitable rainfall and huge abandon hilly land for agar plantation.

• Bangladesh Forest Department (BFD) has substantiated several hectares of agar plantations
sporadically in denuded and encroached forestland areas throughout the country

• especially in Borduara (Satkania, Chittagong), Rangamati, Khagrachari, Bandarban hill tracks,

Harbang and Fasiakhali (Chakaria, Cox’sBazar) districts including 785 ha in Sylhet forest
division. In 2004 Karnafuli tea estate planted agar covering1.56 acres with 426 plants.

• BRAC (Bangladesh Rehabilitation Assistance Committee) Tea Estate started an agar

plantation project at Kaiyachara Tea Estate, Fatikchari in July 2007. They established two
plantation garden for growing and nurturing agar (Aquilaria malaccensis) seedlings and one
for plantation.
Economic Status of Agarwood
• In 2018, the global perfume market size reached 70.70 billion
USD

• In Bangladesh exists a tremendous opportunity to create a highly

profitable fragrance industry in Bangladesh.

• There are also privately owned plantations in the regions of

Maulvibazar, Habiganj, Birisiri and Modhupur.Total farming
expenditure up to the minimum rotation period is 1.2 million BDT
per hectare

• Each enterprise using on an avarage 600kg to 4 tons of agar wood

to produce 0.74-5.75kg of agar wood oil.
Methodology
This Paper Will Be Completely Depends On The Secondary Data Sources
Such As
• Peer Reviewed Journal
• Proceedings And Reports.
• Scholar Journals
• Website ,blogs
Data And Information Will Be Collected On Agar Species
• Ecological Status,
• Economic Profitability Related Information And Barriers In Agar Wood Based Industry.
• Policy Papers Will Also Be Reviewed To Identify The Problems In Promoting Agar Wood
Based Industries In Bangladesh.
Expected Outcome
Although Agar wood has a few major hurdles such as
• The Absence Of Government intervention

• Policy Support

• High Import Taxes Of Importing Countries

• Problems With International Pricing And Marketing

• Lack Of Modern Technology And Insufficient Capital

• Agar-based Businesses Are Increasing Day By Day, Creating New Employment Opportunities For Rural People In This Process.

Although The Government Of Bangladesh Officially Declared Agar Production An “Industrial Sector” In 2014, Many Development

Initiatives Are Still Required
