The document discusses surge protection for lifts (elevators) and provides recommendations. It describes the functions of lifts including smooth starting/stopping, traffic optimization, and energy saving. It also outlines common lift types such as traction, hydraulic, climbing, pneumatic, and electromagnetic propulsion lifts. The document then discusses reasons lifts may be damaged by lightning including damage to master control boards, sensors, and electronic equipment in the machine room. It recommends using surge protection devices (SPDs) to prevent downtime and equipment damage from transients and surges. Specific SPD models are recommended for the main service panel and elevator control panel.

SURGE PROTECTION FOR
LIFTS MADE BY BARABÁS SÁNDOR FUNCTION OF THE LIFTS
• LIFTS OR ELEVATORS ARE A TYPE OF VERTICAL TRANSPORTATION
FOUND IN HIGH-RISES AND SKYSCRAPERS THAT ARE PRIMARILY UTILIZED TO CONVEY PEOPLE BETWEEN SEVERAL FLOORS. • SMOOTH STARTING AND STOPPING CONTROLLED BY A FREQUENCY CONVERTER • TRAFFIC OPTIMISATION MEASURES (E.G. NO STOP IN CASE OF FULL LOAD, PRIORITY TRAVELS, BEHAVIOUR OF LIFTS IN CASE OF FIRE) • ENERGY SAVING FUNCTION (CABIN LIGHTING AND VENTILLATOR ARE SWITCHED OFF IN CASE OF EMPTY TRAVELS OR STANDSTILL) • POWER SUPPLY FUNCTION (THE KINETIC ENERGY GENERATED BY GOODS TRANSPORT TOT HE GROUND FLOOR AND EMPTY TRAVELS TOT HE TOP FLOORS IS FED INTO THE POWER SUPPLY SYSTEM) ELEVATOR TYPES TRACTION ELEVATORS: THESE ELEVATORS ARE GENERALLY USED IN HIGH-RISES AND OTHER LARGE ESTABLISHMENTS, BOTH FOR TRANSPORTING PEOPLE AND FREIGHTS. THESE CAN FURTHER BE CLASSIFIED INTO: HYDRAULIC ELEVATORS: THESE ARE LESS COMPLEX THAN THE TRACTION ELEVATORS AND ARE HENCE IDEAL FOR LOW TRAFFIC OR LOW-RISE BUILDINGS AND ESTABLISHMENTS. USING A HYDRAULIC SYSTEM, THESE ELEVATORS PUSH THE ELEVATOR CAR UPWARDS AGAINST THE GRAVITY WHILE THE CAR DESCENDS UNDER THE PULL OF GRAVITY. CLIMBING ELEVATORS: THESE ARE SELF-ASCENDING AND USE THEIR OWN PROPULSION TO ASCEND. THIS PROPULSION CAN EITHER BE ACHIEVED BY A COMBUSTION OR ELECTRIC ENGINE. THESE TYPES OF ELEVATORS ARE GENERALLY USED IN TOWERS OR GUYED MASTS SO AS TO FACILITATE THE EASY ACCESS FOR THE MAINTENANCE OF DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE CONSTRUCTED STRUCTURE. PNEUMATIC ELEVATOR: AS THE NAME SUGGESTS THESE ELEVATORS USE A VACUUM AND A VALVE TO MOVE THE CAR UPWARDS AND AIR IN PLACE OF THE VACUUM TO MOVE IT DOWN. THESE ARE HOWEVER, LOW CAPACITY ELEVATORS WHEREIN ONLY ABOUT 3 PASSENGERS WITH A COMBINED WEIGHT OF 525POUNDS CAN GET ON IT AT THE SAME TIME. ELECTROMAGNETIC PROPULSION ELEVATORS: THESE CABLE-FREE ELEVATORS USE ELECTROMAGNETIC PROPULSION TO MOVE THE CAR WHICH CAN MOVER BOTH HORIZONTALLY AND VERTICALLY. REASONS FOR THE DAMAGE TO ELEVATORS CAUSED BY LIGHTNING DAMAGE TO MASTER CONTROL BOARDS: WHEN BUILDINGS HAVING AN ELEVATOR AND THE NEARBY BUILDINGS ARE SUBJECTED TO DIRECT LIGHTNING STROKE, THE LIGHTNING STROKE BRINGS A HUGE TRANSIENT ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELD, SO THAT THE LINES OF THE ELEVATOR INDUCE OVERVOLTAGE AND OVERCURRENT TO CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE CONTROL SYSTEM. ONCE AN ELEVATOR IS STRUCK BY LIGHTNING, THESE CONTROL DEVICES ARE EASILY INTERFERED OR BURNED OUT DUE TO LOW WORKING VOLTAGE. IN THIS LIGHTNING DISASTER, THE MASTER CONTROL BOARDS OF FOUR ELEVATORS WERE DAMAGED BY LIGHTNING. SUCH DAMAGE ACCOUNTS FOR THE MAJORITY OF ELEVATOR ACCIDENTS CAUSED BY LIGHTNING. REASONS FOR THE DAMAGE TO ELEVATORS CAUSED BY LIGHTNING
DAMAGE TO SENSORS: ALTHOUGH THE GROUNDING SYSTEM OF AN ELEVATOR IS DESIGNED
AS A SYSTEM WITH A CERTAIN CAPABILITY OF OVERVOLTAGE PROTECTION, LIGHTNING WAVE CAN INVADE THE ELEVATOR DUE TO THE POOR LIGHTNING PROTECTION SYSTEM OF THE PARENT ( AN BUILDING ) ITSELF. AS A RESULT, THE TRANSIENT OVERVOLTAGE CAUSED BY THE INDUCED CURRENT ON THE POWER LINE OF THE DEVICE IS CAUSED, AND THE CONTROL SYSTEM OF HE ELEVATOR IS SUBJECTED TO LIGHTNING STROKE FREQUENTLY. IN THIS LIGHTNING DISASTER, THE SENSORS OF TWO ELEVATORS WERE BROKEN BY LIGHTNING BECAUSE COMMUNICATION LINES INDUCED LIGHTNING ELECTROMAGNETIC PULSES. INTERFERENCE OF ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENTIN THE MACHINE ROOM OF ELEVATORS BY LIGHTNING STROKE: OTHER ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT IN THE SAME BUILDING IS STRUCK BY LIGHTNING, AND BECAUSE POWER LINES ARE CONNECTED IN THE POWER DISTRIBUTION ROOM, THE CONDUCTION AND SHUNTING OF LIGHTNING CURRENT OR LIGHTNING INDUCTION CURRENT CAUSES DAMAGE TO ELEVATORS.
