ORGANIZATIONAL INNOVATION AND ITS IMPORTANCE IN THE
GLOBAL WORKFORCE. 1

Organizations that have distinguished themselves as great leaders within their industries, embrace
innovation as part of their overall business strategy.
Innovation is described as the activities involved in conceiving new products, processes or ideas or to
approach existing ones in new ways (Purcell, 2019).
Several business successes experienced today are due to risks taken to adapt to new processes while
expanding their operations. It is worthy to note that growth in technology has been the biggest
improvement to life in the past 50 years, and as a result, companies that embrace innovation have had
great advantage in ultimately meeting the demands of their customers.
For the purpose of this presentation, two (2) examples of organizational innovation are Samsung and
McDonalds.
Samsung’s introduction of the Chief Design Officer made it possible for creative talents to have direct
access to top management to express their ideas; this is in contrast to the existing hostile work culture
where employees could not freely express their opinions. Such barriers were overcome through
introduction of innovative leadership and a flexible corporate culture that is why Samsung’s goal is
“Good design is the most important way to differentiate us from competitors”.
Organizational Innovation continued……. 2

For McDonalds, one of the methods of organizational innovation was to create its own test kitchen
where all employees (regardless of the hierarchy level) develop new ideas and try them out. Anyone
can discuss new ideas with anyone and the result is a wealth of ideas that flow through the
organization from all directions.
The importance of innovation cannot be overemphasized as it helps companies grow incrementally
and expand rapidly. This could happen either through merging and acquiring other businesses.
Innovation keeps organization relevant when they adapt to new realities as new businesses enter the
market to disrupt incumbents while existing companies innovate to ward off competition and remain
relevant in a dynamic environment. Innovation differentiates organizations from its competitors as it
will continue to update and develop its products until there is nothing like it in the market – this is
very typical in an oversaturated industry.
The risks inherent include: uncertain commercial returns as there are no guarantee of future revenue
and profits; innovation processes and products are difficult to protect leave competition to enjoying
an already made research; sometimes, limited cash resources would pose a very high opportunity
cost of investing in innovation.
INNOVATION STRATEGIES TO IMPROVE CJ’s COFFEE SHOP 3

- Put People First: create a positive working environment for workers so they can give the best
experience to customers as there will be reduced employee turn-over rate when employees are
happy
- Introduce bottled coffee variants: such as coffee latte, hot chocolate and flavoured coffee in 500ml
and 1,000ml store keeping units
- Introduce Free and Fast WiFi: where clients will hang out for longer hours.
- Use Digital solutions (Mobile App): where customers can earn points for free items, order drinks,
pay and more.
- Use Cozy interior design: when arranged in a special manner would ease flow and foster a feeling
of community.
Looking to the future, upon implementation of these strategies, CJ’s coffee shop and restaurant will
become more interesting especially with its Partnership That Wins promotions (via the Mobile App)
which will allow loyalty members play games and earn score points towards freebies.
In order to drive business success, stay relevant in a dynamic world and stand out amidst
competition, CJ must continue to think creatively, embrace innovation and understand
implementation of innovation by getting exposed to skills and knowledge needed to drive such
innovation.
