RETINOSCOPY

AUTHOR: RIMI SREE DAS

LEARNING OUTCOME OF THE TOPIC

Students will learn and

understand the importance
of changing the power
orientation and axis of a
spectacle power.
RETINOSCOPE

 An accurate objective measurement of the

refractive status of an eye can be made
using a Retinoscope.
 The technique is called Retinoscopy

 Also known as Pupilloscopy, Shadowscopy,

Umbrascopy, Scotoscopy
 F. Cuigent is the father of retinoscope. In
1873 the first retinoscope was described
TYPES OF RETINOSCOPE

Reflecting Mirror
• Plane mirror
Retinoscope/Simple
• Pristly Smith Retinoscope
Retinoscope

Self Illuminated • Spot Retinoscope

Retinoscope • Streak Retinoscope
REFLECTING MIRROR/SIMPLE RETINOSCOPE

 A perforated mirror by which the beam is

reflected in to patients eye and through a
central hole that emergent rays entre the
observer’s eye.
 Movement of the illuminated retinal area
are produced by tilting a mirror, either
plane or concave
ADVANTAGE & DISADVANTAGE OF PLANE MIRROR

Advantage:
 Cheaper than self illuminated

Disadvantages:
 Requires a separate light source

 Glare from the source of light is annoying to

the patient
 To check the axis and amount of cylinder is
difficult
 Intensity & type of beam cannot be changed
or controlled
SELF ILLUMINATED RETINOSCOPE

 The light source and the mirror are incorporated in one.

 STREAK RETINOSCOPE - Light source is a linear (uncoiled) filament

Two operating • Projection System

system • Observation System
PROJECTION SYSTEM

Main purpose:
 To illuminate the Retina

 Consists of
 Light Source
 Condensing lens
 Mirror
 Focusing sleeve
 Current source
OBSERVATION SYSTEM

 Main purpose

 To allow the observer to see the retinal

reflex of the patient
ADVANTAGES OF STREAK RETINOSCOPE

• Self Illuminated (Mirror & Light

source are incorporated in one
Advantages • Easily manipulated and the
intensity and the type of beam
can be easily controlled
ADVANTAGES OF STREAK RETINOSCOPE OVER SPOT
RETINOSCOPE

• Exact axis of cylinder power

can be found easily using a
ADVANTAGES streak retinoscope
• In high refractive errors by
using concave mirror effect we
can find the amount of
refractive error
FAR POINT
 The far point of eye is defined as the point in space that is conjugate with the fovea when accomodation is
relaxed

• Parallel rays focus on fovea

Emmetropia • Retina conjugate with infinity
• Far point is at infinity

• Parallel rays focus behind the retina

• Far point is beyond infinity
Hypermetropia
• Plus lens converges rays on to the
retina & conjugate fovea with infinity

• Parallel rays focus infront of the retina

Myopia • Far point is between infinity and eye
• Minus lens diverges rays on the retina &
conjugate fovea with retina
