Example 1: It began to rain and we didn’t go for a walk.(fact in the past)
Conditional: If it hadn’t been the rain, we would have gone for a walk.(3rd Cond.) Alternative Conditional: But for the rain we would have gone for a walk. Example 2: I’ve got a huge amount of homework. So I can’t go out with you(fact in the present) Conditional: If I didn’t have such a huge amount of homework, I’d go out with you(2nd Cond.) Alternative Conditional : But for a huge amount of homework I would go out with you Alternative to If: Task 2. Rewrite each sentence so that it contains the construction “but for” 1. He could not see the play as he had some work to do.(fact in the past – 3rd cond) But for + noun/ verb + ing But for some work to do he could have seen the play 2. I don’t want to tell you this.
