ABSTRACT :
Chaff cutter is one of the agricultural equipment used to chop all kinds of green
and fodder into small pieces to feed animals .Due to less cost and ease of operation,it is
available in every household owning cattle.Size Reduction operations is considered
to be one of the most energy intensive or energy inefficient operations.The
manually operated chaff cutter has a scope for modification in the chaff cutter based on
human power and energy requirement for cutting differ fodders.The modification in
the chaff cutter were increasing number of blades for cutting single,A double,three
and four blade reducing throat area by A,A/2,A/3,A/4.

INTRODUCTION :
A Chaff cutter is a mechanical device use to cut the straw or hay into
small pieces so as mix together and fed to cattle. This improves animal digestion and
prevents animal from rejecting any part of their food.As per today's scenario the
population of buffalos is drastically increased.so to increase the productivity and
reduce the physical effort required for running the machine the motorised machineries
all came to for dairy farmers. Presently fodder cutting machines are electric driven as
well as hand operated or engine driven.
REVIEW OF LITERATURE
• Johansen et al. (2014) studied the modernization of machine. The authors
described as the demand for beef, meet and milk products is increasing day by day
so people all around the world are interested in increasing the production of these.
Small farmers all around the world have a major problem of scarcity of quality
fodder to feed their animals especially in winter season.
• Khope et al. (2013) studied detailed design of experimentation to be
performed for establishing empirical relationship of chaff cutting phenomena
energized by human powered flywheel motor.
• Ziauddin et al. (2010) conducted the research on pedal operated flywheel
motor as an energy source for fodder chopper. The authors concluded that the
developing countries facing an energy crisis so felt that pedal operated flywheel
motor is very necessary. This machine is environment friendly and help to save a
power .
• Mohan et al. (2004) conducted the research on process of the community
based study and safe design features of fodder cutter machine. Fodder chopper
machine are major cause of serious injuries to the hands of both adults and
children in the villages. The machine injuries based on two groups. In the adults
injuries occur from feeding side, loose garments, hand hits the blade during
sharpening the blades. Made the fodder cutter safe following innovations like
warning roller
• Bandiwadekar et al. (2016) studied an exploration on plan and improvement
of debris cutting machine. The authors outline another cutting machine which is
more secure and exertion lessening with least power utilization.
• Ahmad et al. (2015) conducted a review on Fodder cutter removals
Evaluation of hazard factors. The authors led this exploration paper to decide the
range of wounds with grub cutter (taka)machines and which sex is more inclined
to these wounds in southern Punjab. The authors said that traumatic grain cutter
removals are intense and exceptional injuries.
• Singh et al. (1997) conducted examination on enhanced grub cutter. The author
thought to make another feed cutter which is more productive than existing. The
author said that in existing machines the grain must be encouraged in small
bundles and care must be taken that the amount bolstered is not all that much or
too little.
• Lazaro et al. (1990) studied on livestock production that it is very important and
for the maintainable and intensive livestock production system. The authors need
a thorough study and knowledge of the stability and restriction of the system.
• Karunya et al. (2015) studied on SWARAJ TOKA. Most of the farmers chop the
fodder in small pieces by the use of sharp knives or sickles for feeding the animals
which may intensify the utilization and the digestion ratio.
• Patil et al. (2016) conducted a search on chaff cutter .The authors said that Chaff
cutter is a hay or straw cutting machine which is used in uniform chopping of the
fodder for livestock or raw material to agro industries. The various types of fodder
can be processed in this machine are forage grass, green grass, dry corn straw, and
wheat stalk.

• It is made up of 4 angle iron pieces.
• Braces are provided in between the legs of stand to make it firm and durable.

MOTOR:
• An electric motor is an electrical machine that converts electrical energy into
mechanical energy.
• 1hp motor is used for this chaff cutter.
• 1 horsepower is equal to 0.74569987 kilowatts, which is the conversion factor
from horsepower to kilowatts.

The definition of a shaft is a long, narrow handle or a long narrow part of
something, a sudden bolt of light or a sudden flash of some feeling. The long narrow
handle of a golf club is an example of a shaft.

• Chaff Cutters are made from high carbon steel for higher strength.
• The hardness of the edge blade is in the range 38-45 HRC.
• Size - 13" L x 4" W x 8 mm thickness.

• Inlet hole is the area where the feeds are fed into the cutter.
• The main function is to allow the feed continuously and equally into the cutter.
• It is made up of stainless steel.
• Its diameter about 15cm.

insulated, and used to carry electric current in a circuit.
• A device for making an electrical connection between an appliance and the

METHADOLOGY:
• Detection of problem in chaff cutter– The existing machines are observed and
studied properly to detect the problems faced by the user.
• New cutting technology – The research work in this part was studied and new
methods were developed to achieve desired goal.
• Implementation of mechanism - Instead of using electric motor we were using
torsion spring to rotate the flywheel by using chain drive.
• Performance testing- After implementation of mechanism trials was taken to
check the performance of machine. we were detecting the errors and correct it

WORKING PRICIPAL:
•Chaff Cutter and Grinder Working Principle. The high-speed rotating working
parts destroy the deposition of the material layer, the raw material moves with the
rotor.
•In this process, the grass or the granular collides or rubs with each other so that
it is crushed into smaller sizes than mesh diameter.
•Chaff cutter is used to cut green (dry) corn straw, wheat straw, straw and other
crop straw and forage grass.
•The processed materials are suitable for breeding cattle, sheep, deer, horses,
etc., but also can be processed cotton straw, branches, bark, etc., for straw power
generation, ethanol extraction, papermaking, artificial board and other industries.
• When power supplied, the motor will start, then the fly wheel rotates. At the
same time the chaff feeds through a tin sheet metal. Then the chaff will cut into
small piece, it will helpful for cattle.
• Motors are the mating powers. The powers are transmitted to the main shaft.
• When the materials under processing enter into the upper and lower grass
rollers and after being fed into the cutting room by the grass rollers and cut in the
cutting room, the materials get out from the outlet hole through high-speed cutter.
FEATURES:
• Three-blade cutter plate is equipped with steel reinforcing ring, which is rigid,
strong and integrated; A bidirectional adjusting nut is added between the cutter
disc and the spindle to facilitate axial movement and more free blade clearance
adjustment.
• Design safety guide device for moving knives to prevent nibbling accidents and
ensure the safety and reliability of the whole machine.

SCOPE
Diary farm
•In dairy farms it is used to cut the chaff, dry grass, green grass at a very large
scale.
Farm fields
• Farmer uses the chaff cutter for cutting the chaffs and other things which are to
be feed to the domestic elements.
Animal food processing industries:
•Now a day, there are industries which manufacture food for animals through this
chaff, there also this chaff cutter is used.
CONCLUSION
• Machine has reduced noise and weight due to gears arrangement and compact
design.
• Machine has casters for portability.
• Machine has 100kg/hr fodder cutting rate
• Fodder size is 20mm in length
• Forward and reversed rotation arrangements for blades.
