WHAT IS
COMMUNICATION?
COMMUNICATION

Communication is an integral part of our daily life.

Whether we are talking to and with our friends, or we are
writing important letters to our leaders or bosses,
communication takes place.
•All through our lives, we
continually change how we
speak and what we speak about.
Each situation or purpose such
as asking questions, arguing,
and persuading demand a
slightly different method of
communication from us.
WHAT ARE THE PURPOSE
OF COMMUNICATION?
It’s first purpose is to inform
(informative or expository
communication).

It is to simply convey
PURPOSE OF information factually
COMMUNICATI
ON Its objective is to supply new
information, enhance prior
knowledge, and/or explain a
process procedure.

In doing an informative presentation,

one should stick to the facts, avoid
repetition of words or information,
and make the presentation clear.
PURPOSE OF
COMMUNICATION

• It’s next purpose is to argue

(argumentative).
• In communicating, we can never say
“yes” all the time especially when we
know that something is not right or it
different from what we believe in.
• In an argumentation, we should
provide solid and valid evidence.
Evidence will come from the
references or sources cited in the
book, magazines, journals, articles
and any other printed materials.
PURPOSE OF
COMMUNICATION

Even though the word

argumentation gives us a negative
impression of people shouting at each
other, remember that it is not just what it
is all about, but also we use arguments
on a daily basis, and probably we develop
some skills of crafting an argument.

Informal setting, debates and

meetin’ de avance are examples of
argumentation.
PURPOSE OF
COMMUNICATION
• It’s third purpose is to persuade
(persuasive).
• Persuasion is pushing across an idea and
convincing people or readers to support the
idea you want to convey.
• In doing a persuasive presentation one
must be objective, but subjective, use
his/her brain, not his/her heart; and cite.

• Examples of persuasion are TV

commercials, periodical advertisements,
billboards, and job interviews.
