STANDARD DANCE
o Standard dancing is another term for some
of the same ball room or partnering
dancing.
o These dances are performed in close contact
between partners and are enjoyed both
socially and competitively.
TYPES OF
STANDARD DANCE
WALTZ
o Waltz means “to roll or revolve”.
o Waltz is the oldest of the current ballroom dances.
First waltzes were danced in the location of today’s
Germany and Austria, back in 13th century.
o Due to its close-hold and quick rotations, Waltz
was once named the “Forbidden Dance”.

BASIC STEP OF WALTZ
• The basic step for waltz is the box step. It is named after a
pattern it creates on the floor (box or square) and forms the
foundation of the dance.
• A box step can be divided into two parts – a forward half box
and a backward half box.
MEN’S STEPS
• The basic step for Tango is the 8-Count Basic or the Tango
Basic.
• Tango basic is made of five steps taken to 8 counts of
music. The rhythm is slow, slow, quick, quick, slow. The
slow steps consumes two beats of music and the quick steps
one.

BASIC FORWARD
1. Step forward with your left foot (slow
step).
2. Step forward with your right foot (slow
step).
3. Side step to the left with your left foot
(quick step).
4. Move your right foot to your left foot
(quick step).

1. Step backward with your left foot (slow
step).
2. Step backward with your right foot
(slow step).
3. Side step to the left with your left foot
(quick step).
4. Move your right foot to your left foot
(quick step).
