BARANGAY SARAYAN

PROFILE
HISTORICAL
BACKGROUND

In many cases the names of places are derived from the names of creeks,
brooks, rivers, mountains, hills and the like; were they are located. Similarly,
this is true to the barangay of Sarayan, which is located near a small creek
called Sarayan. This creek branched out from the Arakan river. It will be noted
that there are now two barangays in as North and South Sarayan. North
Sarayan is within the Municipality of President Roxas while South Sarayan is
within the Municipality of Matalam. However, both barangays are located
within an area of 100 hectares is now known as Sarayan Town site No. 304,
Pls. 579 as surveyed by the foemer Bureau of Lands, Kidapawan (now
Kidapawan City) with the late Cipriano Beredo as Chief of the Survey Party in
1958.
SARAYAN MATALAM COTABATO
 Somewhere between 1915-1920 a weel known Religious Manobo leader named
Magdaganday with council members Old man Kibangan, Old man Antaran, Old
man Ansayod, Old man Laguian and Old Man Sambal once occupied the vicinity
we now call Sarayan. Here they have established a community/village that was
well known and popular throughout the Arakan Valley. The village was surrounded
by mountain ranges. In the West stand proudly the Pidtalawan range that
overlooks barangay Salat along the famous Rio Grande de Mindanoe (Pulangi
River); in the North protrudes the Magontora range which separates the two
provinces of Cotabato and Bukidnon; in the South are the Migkohoan-Kamasi
ranges and in the East are the Kabalantian-Sinaka ranges. All these mountain
ranges overlook the vast Arakan Valley Complex in every direction. The villagers of
Sarayan feel proud of their location. They felt that these mountain ranges serve as
a natural decoration of their beautiful and happy community. The word decoration
means “rayan dayan” in the Manobo dialect means pride. In this manner the
Manobos call or name their village Sarayan to connote with their feeling of pride
as a group and proud of living in a happy and beautiful community they have
established for themselves and for their generation yet to come.

 In the year 1952 or about 48 years before, the author of this brief history
of Sarayan was mandated to open a primary School in Sarayan to be
exact it was on November 24,1952 that the said Primary School was
formally opened with 82 pupils both boys and girls. It was indeed a real
pioneering job to undertake. The 36 original families left no stones
unturned in establishing once again this barangay, which we fondly call
Sarayan. Residents (all highlanders) from nearby Sitios Malatab, Lama-
Lama, Bato-Bato, Bato, Balonto, Salat, etc. came out to Sarayan joined in
the re-establishment of this community.
 With the able leadership of Datu Sambal who led the foundation of
Sarayan, it is now considered as one of the progressive barangays in the
Arakan Valleey complex.
 In May 1973 however, Sarayan was totally damaged/destroyed. It was
attacked by the “Balck-Shirts” and as a result barangay Sarayan was burned
to ashes. No house or any structure was spared.
 Everything went up in smoke. This untimely attacked by the “Muslim-Black
Shirts” was clear retaliation to what the “Ilagas” was organized by the
Christians and with some Highlanders spread like wild fire in almost
throughout Mindanao.
 The rehabilitation of Sarayan and the whole of Arakan Vally were started
with the creation of Arakan Valley Development Project/Program. The late
Captain Simeon Felix, a Military Engineer, headed this. Through his initiatives
and efforts, the rehab program was hastened. Constructions of Farm-to-
Market roads including repairs of school buildings were also undertaken.
Organization of Civilian Home Defense Forces everywhere in the valley
