    THE NEED FOR STANDARDS

     In past, many of the networks that were built used different


    hardware and software implementations, so incompatible and it
    became difficult to communicate with each other.

     Established in 1947, the International Standards Organization


    (ISO) is a multinational body dedicated to worldwide
    agreement on international standards. ISO recognised need to
    create a NETWORK MODEL that would help various networks
    to communicate
    THE OSI MODEL
    An ISO standard that covers all aspects of network
    communications is the Open Systems Interconnection
    (OSI) model. It was first introduced in the late 1970s.

    An open system is a set of protocols that allow two


    different systems to communicate regardless of their
    underlying architecture.
