What is electric current ?
Electric Current is the rate of flow of electrons in a conductor. The SI unit of electric current is
the Ampere(A).
Electrons are negatively charged particles hence when they move, a number of charges moves ,
and we call this movement of electrons as electric current.
The magnitude of electric current is measured in couloms per second.
Hence, 1 ampere = 1 coulomb / 1 second
Current flows from positive terminal to the negative terminal.
There are two types of electric current :
1. Direct Current(DC) : In DC , the electric charge flows in one direction
only, maintaining a constant polarity . Batteries and many electronic
devices operate on DC .
2. Alternating Current(AC) : In AC , the electric charge periodically
reverses direction , changing polarity overtime . AC is commonly used in
household electrical systems and is the type of current delivered by power
plants to homes and businesses .
