VOLCANOES
SCIENCE 9
QUARTER 3 MODULE 1
OBJECTIVES:
1. Identify the types of volcanoes
according to shapes and activities;
2. Observe how a volcano erupts by
simply using localized materials; and
3. Relate what you have learned into
your daily lives.
What is a volcano?
It is a natural opening in
the surface of the Earth
where molten rocks
(lava), hot gases, smoke
and ash are ejected.
Volcanoes are mountains with vents
and craters that serve as a pathway for
lava and molten rocks coming from the
magma chamber.
Pacific Ring of Fire

1. Chain of
active
volcanoes
2. Home to
many volcanoes
According to PHIVOLCS, Philippines
is home of hundred volcanoes.
There are 53 recorded active
volcanoes in the country.
• TRIVIA:
PHILVOCS(PHILIPPINE INSTITUTE of VOLCANOLOGY
and SEISMOLOGY) is a service institute of DOST
(Department of Science and Technology) that is mandated
to mitigate disasters that may arise from volcanic eruptions,
earthquakes, tsunamis and other related geotectonic
phenomena.
What is Volcanism

is a natural process of eruption of

molten rocks, pyroclastic
fragments, and gaseous
materials underneath the surface
of the Earth.
What is MAGMA?

Molten rocks ejected

beyond the surface of
the Earth.

Volcanic Explosivity Index or VEI

• an instrument used to determine the magnitude

of an explosive eruption based on the total
volume of erupted material called tephra.

• operates like a Richter scale for earthquakes that

each interval in value represents a ten times
increasing magnitude. The scale starts at zero
and the largest eruption is magnitude 8.
Classification of Volcanoes according to the activities of
eruption

• those that shown eruption for the past

600 years based on the analysis of
volcanic deposits.

volcanoes but do not have any history
of eruptions.

Classification of Volcanoes according to the activities of
eruption

• Dormant volcanoes have not erupted for the past

500 years but has the chance to erupt again
• Extinct volcanoes are those that do not erupt for
the past 5000 years and do not have the chance to
erupt again

Types of Volcanic Cones

* Composite Volcano also refer as

stratovolcano consist of lava and
pyroclastic flows.
* It has steep side and symmetrical
cones with huge base developed by
lava flows, volcanic ashes , blocks of
stones and bombs.
* They can reach 8,000 feet above the
grounds.
Mayon
* It has violent eruptions. Volcano
Types of Volcanic Cones

* Cinder Volcano has steep slopes and

considered as the simplest. It is
constructed from
semi-fluid lava ejected from the vent. It
rarely erupts violently because of the
small craters and does not rise a
thousand feet above the sea level.
As the gas filled lava violently erupts into the air
as it breaks into tiny fragments that solidify and

Taal Volcano
fall as cinders spherical to the vent to form an
oval cone.
Types of Volcanic Cones

*Shield Volcanoes are flat Mauna Loa

and vast volcanoes. It has a
slope that covers the area.
Lava is less viscous and
explode at low intensity. It
does not explode violently
as it expels just a hundred
meters away.
Types of Volcanic Eruptions

Four factors on the degree of explosions of volcano:

amount of gas in viscosity of the

the magma magma

percentage rate of number of nucleation sites

decompression of the where it begin to form
magma from beneath bubbles
Types of Volcanic Eruptions

Phreatic also called

as hydrothermal
which is a steam
driven eruption as
hot rocks comes in
contact with water. Mt. Bulusan
Types of Volcanic Eruptions

Phreatomagmatic
is a violent eruption
due to the
interaction
between water and Taal Volcano
magma.
Types of Volcanic Eruptions

Strombolian is a type
of volcanic eruptions
with relatively mild
blast having a Volcanic
explosivity index of 1
to 3. The eruptions are
small to medium in
volume and sporadic Stromboli Volcano
violence.
Types of Volcanic Eruptions

Vulcanian is
characterized by tall
columns of eruption
reaching up to 20 km
high with pyroclastic
flows and ash fall of
tephra. Paricutin Volcano
Types of Volcanic Eruptions

Plinian is considered
as the most violent
kind of eruption
exemplified by the
fragmentation of
highly gas charged Pinatubo Volcano
and viscous magma.
