CHEMICAL ENGINEERING
MATHEMATICS
 Mathematics is used a great deal in Chemical Engineering, especially since
Chemical engineers design materials and the processes by which those
materials are made.
 To solve chemical problems, many types of mathematics are used, not
least of which is calculus (including partial differential equations). Even
simple calculations, such as working on chemical formulas and equations,
involve mathematics.
 Using mathematics, they are involved in such studies as thermodynamics,
chemical reaction processes, and process dynamics, design, and control.
 Chemical engineers also build mathematical models and analyze the
results, mostly to help understand the performance of a process.
CHEMICAL ENGINEERING
MATHEMATICS
 Mathematical model for chemical engineering systems can take many
forms. They can be sets of algebraic equations, differential equations,
and /or integrated equations.
 Mass and energy balances of the chemical processes typically lead to large
sets of algebraic equations.

 Mass balance of the stirred tank reactors may lead to ordinary differential
equations.
CHEMICAL ENGINEERING
MATHEMATICS
 Radiative heat transfer may lead to integral equations.

 There are several significant problems in chemical engineering that require

a fundamental understanding of differential equations in order to fully
appreciate the underlying transport phenomena.
CHEMICAL ENGINEERING
MATHEMATICS
 We have covered different type of mathematical problems including steady
state material and energy problems, design problems in various subjects of
Chemical Engineering.
 In this subject our focus this specifically on the direct solution and various
techniques for solving the ordinary and partial differential equations.
