Unit#2 Practice Q’s Sampling Strategies and Data Analysis

1. Describe a systematic sampling method to investigate the distribution and abundance of mussels
living between high tide and low tide on a rocky shore. [10]

3. You’re estimating the size of a population of turtles at Dania Beach. You capture 20 turtles at your
first visit and mark their back with red paint. Two weeks later you return to Dania beach and capture
25 turtles. Five of these 25 turtles have red paint on their back. Using the Lincoln index equation,
calculate the estimated population size. Show your work. [3]
4. Use the following data and the Lincoln index to calculate population size. After random sampling,
200 alligators were captured, tagged and released. Four weeks later, 180 untagged and 20 tagged
alligators were sampled at the same location. [3]

5. Use the following data and the Lincoln index to calculate population size. A capture–mark–recapture
method was used to determine the number of owls on an island. The following data was recorded:
• The number of owls initially caught, marked and released = 22
• The total number of owls caught in the second sample = 14
• The number of marked owls in the second sample = 2

6. The diversity of ground cover vegetation in a given area is tested using sampling with random
quadrats. The number of plant species in each quadrat, as well as the number of individuals of
each species, is recorded. Calculate the biodiversity using the following data and Simpson’s index.

Species Number (n)

A 5
B 8
C 2
D 7
E 3
Total N=
7. Calculate biodiversity in a river using the following data and Simpson’s index. Write out the steps you
have taken to get to your answer.

Species Number
Fish 83
Frogs 110
Insect larva 65
Snails 9
Total

8. Compare the biodiversity of the ecosystems in question#6 and question#7.

11. An investigation was undertaken to determine the difference in vegetation cover between a
grassland where cows are present and a grassland where cows are not present. Random sampling
using quadrats was used in each area. In the area with cows, purple flowers were found in six of the
40 quadrats, while in the area without cows it was present in 30 of the 40 quadrats.

(a) Use the data to calculate the frequency of purple flowers. Show how you arrived at your answer.
