1. What is GSM

The Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) is a standard for mobile
telecommunications used globally. It's a digital cellular network technology that
allows mobile devices to communicate with each other and access services such
as:
1. Voice calls
2. 2. Text messaging (SMS)
3. 3. Data transfer (GPRS, EDGE, 3G, 4G)
4. 4. Mobile internet
GSM is a widely used standard, with over 90% of the world's mobile market share.
It operates on various frequency bands, including 850 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz,
and 1900 MHz
2. Features of GSM

Some of the important features of GSM are as follows:

1. GSM can support more subscribers in the given spectrum
2. The short messaging service (SMS) is provided by the GSM standard, that
allows its subscribers to transmit and receive character text messages
3. GSM has a subscriber identity module (SIM), which is a memory device that
stores all the important information like subscriber's identification number
4. The GSM system provides the on-the-air privacy by encrypting the digital bit
stream sent by the GSM transmitter.
5. The same GSM phone can be used in different networks.
3. GSM services

GSM services are of following two types and they are as per the ISD
Nguidelines:

1. Teleservices
2. Data services

Teleservices: are the services corresponding to the standard mobile

telephony and the traffic originated from either tele services or data
services.
Data services:Data services are the GSM services corresponding to the
communication between computers and packet
4. Standardization and services

GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) is a wireless communication

standard that was developed to provide a common standard for mobile devices
across the globe. Here are some key aspects of GSM standardization and services:
Standardization:
1. Frequency bands: GSM operates on various frequency bands, including 850
MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, and 1900 MHz.
2. Network architecture: GSM defines a network architecture that includes base
stations, base station controllers, and mobile switching centers.
3. Air interface: GSM standardizes the air interface, which is the communication
link between the mobile device and the base station.
4. Security: GSM includes security features like encryption and authentication to
protect user data and prevent unauthorized access.
Services:
1. Voice calls: GSM supports voice calls, including emergency calls and call
forwarding.
2. SMS (Short Message Service): GSM introduced SMS, which allows users to
send and receive text messages.
3. Data services: GSM supports data services like GPRS (General Packet Radio
Service), EDGE (Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution), and HSPA (High-
Speed Packet Access).
4. Roaming: GSM enables international roaming, allowing users to use their
mobile devices in different countries.
5. Supplementary services: GSM supports supplementary services like call
waiting, call holding, and call forwarding.

2. Base station subsystem (BSS)
3. The network and switching subsystem (NSS)
4. Operating subsystem (OSS)

Mobile station (MS):This equipment is used to support the

connections of the external terminals such as a PC or FAX.
Base station subsystem (BSS):The BSS and MS are connected to
each other via a radio interface. It is also connected to NSS in the same
way.GSM operation is based on the open system inter connection (OSI)
model.
Network and switching subsystem (NSS):NSS as shown in Fig. 4.3.2
uses an intelligent network (IN). A signalling NSS is one of the main
switching function of GSM.500(D-856) Fig. 4.3.2: MSS extermal enviGSM
specifications with FDMA:The primary job of NSS is the management of
the communication between GSM users and other communication users.
Operation subsystem (OSS):The OSS takes care of the following
areas of operation:
