INTRODUCTION: Basic Facts
• The region is named after the Cagayan River, the
longest and largest river in the Philippines. It
serves as a vital waterway for transportation and
irrigation, flowing through the valley and
emptying into the Luzon Strait.
• Its capital is the City of Tuguegarao.
• It is bounded by three mountain ranges, Sierra
Madre Mountain on the east, Caraballo Mountain
on the south and Cordillera Mountain, and north
of Caraballo Mountain.
• Cagayan is the second largest producer of rice in
the country, second only to Central Luzon. The
region is also the top producer of corn in the
Philippines.

INTRODUCTION: Provinces
• It has 5 provinces namely: Batanes,
Cagayan, Isabela, Nueva Vizcaya, and
Quirino.
• It consists of 90 municipalities
• It is composed of several cities:
Tuguegarao City, Cauayan City, Ilagan
City, Santiago City and Bayombong

INTRODUCTION: Cultural Groups
• There are 3 major ethic groups of people
in Cagayan: the Ybanags, Itawits and
Malawegs.
• Ybanags - the dominant group, are known to
be the tallest among the ethno-linguistic
groups all over the Philippines.
• Itawits - they are more known for their
knowledge in pottery and basket-weaving.
• Malawegs - are known for their skills in
agriculture, mainly lowland rice and corn.

INTRODUCTION: Dialects
• English and Filipino are widely used and
spoken in Cagayan. Predominant local
languages are Ilocano, Ybanag, Ytawes
and Malaueg. Pangasinense , Maranao
and other dialects are also used in some
areas where migrants abound. Majority
of the Cagayanos can speak at least two
of the local languages and have good
command, or at least a working
knowledge, of the English language.

INSULARES
Its capital is the Municipality of Basco.
The province is a tiny archipelago,
consisting of 10 islands. Three of these
are inhabited: Batan, the main island,
and the second largest, Itbayat, and the
largest Sabtang. The indigenous people
of Batanes are called Ivatans who are
nationally acclaimed as the True
Insulares. It is known for picturesque
landscape, traditional stone houses, and
unique Ivatan culture.
