ARMED FORCES FLAG DAY

• Every year, December 7 is observed as the Armed Forces Flag Day in


India to honour the martyrs, veterans and serving personnel of the
defence forces. The day has been observed annually since 1949 to
remember the services of the Army, Navy and Air Force, and collect

INDIAN ARMY

• The Indian Army, a voluntary service, is one of the world's largest


standing armies, with 1,237,000 active troops and 800,000 reserve
troops. Headed by General Manoj Mukund Naravane, the highest rank
is Field Marshal, appointed by the President of India on the advice of
the Union Cabinet of Ministers. The army has a rich combat experience
in diverse terrains and has served in United Nations peacekeeping
operations. It has participated in several UN peacekeeping operations,
including Cyprus, Lebanon, the Democratic Republic of the Congo,
Angola, Cambodia, Vietnam, Namibia, El Salvador, Liberia,
Mozambique, and Somalia.
INDIAN NAVY

• The Indian Navy is the naval branch of the Indian armed forces. With
58,350 men and women, including 7,000 personnel of the Indian Naval
Air Arm, 1,200 Marine Commandos (MARCOS) and 1,000 personnel of
the Sagar Prahari Bal.The Indian Navy is one of the world’s largest
naval forces and developed into a blue water navy.The Indian Navy has
a large operational fleet consisting of 2 aircraft carriers, 1 amphibious
transport dock, 9 Landing ship tanks, 10 destroyers, 14 frigates, 1
nuclear-powered attack submarine, 14 conventionally-powered attack
submarines, 24 corvettes, 6 mine countermeasure vessels, 25 patrol
vessels, 4 fleet tankers and various auxiliary vessels.
INDIAN AIR FORCES

• The International Air Force (IAF) relies on various military craft and
technology for its growth. The Sukhoi Su-30MKI is the primary air
superiority fighter, with 272 ordered, with 205 in service as of May
2015. The Mikoyan MiG-29 is a dedicated air superiority fighter, with 66
in service and being upgraded to the MiG-29UPG standard. The
Dassault Mirage 2000 is the primary multirole fighter, with 49 being
upgraded to the Mirage 2000-5 MK2 standard. A smaller version of
BrahMos missile is being developed for Sukhoi Su-30MKI, expected to
be delivered by 2015.
