What is a VOLCANO?

 A volcano is a rupture in the crust of

a planetary-mass object, such as Earth, that
allows hot lava, volcanic ash, and gases to
escape from a magma chamber below the
surface.
How are they formed?
 Volcanoes are formed when magma from
within the Earth's upper mantle works its way
to the surface. At the surface, it erupts to form
lava flows and ash deposits. Over time as the
volcano continues to erupt, it will get bigger
and bigger.
What are the different
stages of a volcano?

 Scientists have categorized volcanoes into

three main categories: active, dormant, and
extinct. An active volcano is one which has
recently erupted and there is a possibility that
it may erupt soon. A dormant volcano is one
which has not erupted in a long time but there
is a possibility it can erupt in the future. An
extinct volcano is one which has erupted
thousands of years ago and there’s no
possibility of eruption.
Why do volcanoes erupt?
 Volcanoes erupt because of density and
pressure. The lower density of the magma
relative to the surrounding rocks causes it to
rise (like air bubbles in syrup). It will rise to the
surface or to a depth that is determined by the
density of the magma and the weight of the
rocks above it.
Different types of volcano

 1. CINDER CONES

 2. COMPOSITE VOLCANOES

 3. SHIELD VOLCANOES
CINDER CONES
 A cinder cone or scoria cone is a
steep conical hill of
loose pyroclastic fragments, such as either
volcanic clinkers, cinders, volcanic ash,
or scoria that has been built around a volcanic
vent. They consist of loose pyroclastic debris
formed by explosive eruptions or lava
fountains from a single, typically cylindrical,
vent.
COMPOSITE VOLCANO
 Composite volcanoes are constructed from
multiple eruptions, sometimes recurring over
hundreds of thousands of years, sometimes over
a few hundred. Andesite magma, the most
common but not the only magma type forming
composite cones, produces lava more brittle
than basaltic lava because of its higher viscosity.
SHIELD VOLCANO
 A shield volcano is a type
of volcano usually built almost entirely
of fluid magma flows. They are named for
their large size and low profile, resembling
a warrior’s shield lying on the ground.
