• It explains what a
term means.
• When you want your

exactly how you are
using a certain term
or unfamiliar concept.
Types of Definition
1.Formal Definition – provided
in dictionaries, which include
three terms:
a. term – the word being
defined
b. class – the big group to
which the term belongs
c. differentiating features –
a word or phrase that
makes it different with
the others from the same
class

there are three common
informal definitions:

Types of Informal
Definition
1. Operational definition - is
a result of the process of
operationalization and is
used to define something
(e.g. a variable, term, or
object) in terms of a process.
It defines concepts by the
way they are measured.
Used in research.
Examples of Operational
Definition
*Temperature -how much a
column or mercury or red
colored alcohol expands in a
thin tube put in the thing
whose temperature you
want to measure.

*0 degrees– a temperature
at which a concentrated
mixture of salt and water
freezes.
*100 degrees – is the
temperature at which a
liquid begins to boil,
equivalent to 212 degrees
Fahrenheit or 100 degrees

mean the same as another
word.
Example:
A student’s intelligence (or
mental capacity) is
measured by using IQ test.

meaning suggested by or
associated with a word or
thing
Extended Definition
Definition paragraph – is a
definition sentence which is
extended into a paragraph
by adding meanings,
descriptions, narrations, and
other kinds of paragraph
development to make clear
the term being defined that

The paragraph starts with a


definition sentence which is
used as the topic sentence.
Then, each group/class in
the definition is developed
into supporting sentences
and concluding statement.

Anger
Anger is having a feeling of
hatred toward someone or
something. It is one of our
basic emotions and can be
most dangerous if it is not
carefully controlled. A person
can become
Angry when he cannot fulfill
some basic needs or desire
that is important to him. For
example, a child may
become angry when he
cannot play outside with his
friends. An adult may
become angry when he does
not receive a raise in pay
that he expected. Mentally,
anger can interfere with our
to think clearly. Physically, it
may cause violent reactions
in our muscles and in the
nervous system. This causes
an angry person to flush and
tremble and to show other
signs of disturbance. A
person can be dangerous if
he is in an angry mood
because he can develop
feelings of hostility and
toward another person,
which can then often turn
violent.
