Body Composition and

Body fat Percentage

Module
5
In this lesson
• Explain body composition and related terms;
• Enjoy a variety of physical activities with
understanding;
• Perform a variety of physical fitness test using
correct techniques;
• Demonstrate an understanding of concepts and
skills acquired in various physical fitness; and
• Measure their own body fat percentage using an
accepted method
Body composition
Body composition is a combination of fat and tissues in
your body.
2 Types of Fat in Human
Body
Body Fat can be found in muscle tissue, under the skin
or around the organ.
Storage Body Fat also known as lean tissue, includes
bone, water, muscle, organ, and tissue. Lean tissues are
“metabolically active, burning calories for energy, while
body fat is not.” (Scott, 2018).
Importance of Body Composition

Body composition is essential in

health and fitness as it describes the
proportion of fat, bone, and muscle
in the body. Body fat percentage is
particularly important for assessing
overall health.
Importance of Body Composition

Since muscle is denser than fat,

analyzing body fat helps in evaluating
one's health status and making
recommendations. People of the same
height and weight can have different
health concerns due to variations in
body composition.
Factors Affecting Body Composition
1. Age - humans lose muscle mass as they
age.
2. Sex - women have more body fat than
men.
3. Genes - play a role in whether you are
biologically lean or have a tendency to gain
fat.
4. Hormones - can impact on water retention
Body Fat Percentage (BFP)
It is the body composition indicator that reflects
how much bodyweight is fat. The percentage of the
body that is not fat is called lean mass.

Body Fat Percentage Formula:

Total Mass of Fat ÷ Total Body Mass x 100.

Body Fat Percent Norms for Men and
Woman
Description women Men

Essential fat 10% to 13% 2% to 5 %

Athletes 14% to 20% 6% to 14%

Fitness 21% to 24% 14% to 17%

Acceptable 25% to 31% 18% to 24%

Obese Over 32% Over 25

Methods of Measuring Body Fat
Percentage

Skinfold Calipers

a tool used to
measure the
thickness of
subcutaneous fat,
or fat under the
skin
Methods of Measuring Body Fat
Percentage

Bioelectric Impedance

a tool used to
measure the
thickness of
subcutaneous fat,
or fat under the
skin
Methods of Measuring Body Fat
Percentage

Hydrostatic Weighing
In this technique the
body's density is
measured by obtaining
the difference of body
weight in air and under
water using
Archimedes principle.
Methods of Measuring Body Fat
Percentage
DEXA Scan
A special type of X-ray that
measures how strong your
bones are. Doctors use it to
check for bone loss and
conditions, that makes
bones weak and more likely
to break.
Body Mass Index
Is a value derived from the mass (weight) and
height of a person. BMI is sometimes
misunderstood as a measured indicator of body
fat. BMI is just a weight-to-height ratio. It is a
method for determining adult weight status and
general health in big populations.

Formula: BMI= weight in kilogram/ (height in

meter)².
A Word About Calories
A calorie is the energy needed to raise the
temperature of 1 kilogram of water through
1°C, equal to one thousand small calories and
often used to measure the energy value of
foods (°Calorie - Oxford Dictionary, 2020), The
amount of energy in the foods and beverages
you eat and drink is measured by your calorie
intake.
A Word About Calories
Calories are really not necessarily bad for you.
You only have to take them in modernization.
Your body requires calorie-based sustenance.
Consuming to many calories might lead to
health issues and weight gain if you do not
burn enough calories through physical activity.
